EA's Mass Effect 3 far outselling on Xbox 360 over PS3

Mass Effect 3 will hardly be the first video game to have sold more units on the Xbox 360 than the PS3. There are more Xbox 360 consoles in households so that simply stands to reason. But few games are being outsold on the Microsoft platform by a margin as large as this one. In fact, the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 3 is moving units at a rate of four-to-one over the PS3 edition.

Microsoft entertainment chief Aaron Greenberg wasted no time boasting about the statistic, posting on Twitter, "Mass Effect 3 was #1 title in March, 943K units on Xbox 360, outsold PS3 version 4:1. #NPD." So there are a few things to point out, and that incredibly margin of Microsoft preference is certainly one of them. But the other is that even on the top platform, as the #1 game of the month, it didn't manage to sell a million units.

Overall March numbers for the video game industry were below expectations, and some of that disappointment was linked to the new EA shooter. Mass Effect, it should be pointed out in case you don't know, was an Xbox 360 exclusive and it was only with the introduction of Mass Effect 2 that PS3 support was added. The franchise has very strong Xbox roots, but even so, a multiplatform spread of four to one is not something that happens every day.
