Just a guess, but it doesn’t look like the exposure is adjusting on the shots. If that’s true, and the camera is correctly exposed for the daytime sunlight reflecting off the planet, those quaint city lights would be so faint by comparison that they wouldn’t even show up.

but the intention here seems to be ‘you wouldnt appreciate the real image, so heres the overstimulating version’ … I am actually more curious about the real image ALWAYS than the false-color, infrared superimpositions that always seem to replace the faithful images before release

For those asking, green, living vegetation shows up very bright in the near infra-red and is usually coded with a red color for easy viewing. Minerals are usually given cool colors in IR imagery (typically near to mid IR), which are indicated in the greens and blues on land (as well as yellows, of course, representing sand in this image). Browns are likely to be desert scrub/brush. Water greater than ~2 meters in depth typically shows as black as it is among the most effective energy absorbing substances (conversely, water vapor, like clouds show up white in all spectra from visible to near and mid-IR, as it reflects almost all light).

Why don’t we see city lights during the night portion of the time-lapse video? I know some parts of Earth are very dark at night, but not a single metropolitan area can be seen across half the damn world? Are we sure this is even real? I am probably missing something here, but I thought it was strange.

ok maybe I am missing something but the article is about a ”"single 121-megapixel photo”" they only show a small 500×500 pixel pic of that photo without a link to where we can actually Download and view the big 121MP photo.. instead they give a time laps VIDEO of 350 low resolution pics >.< (facepalm) ..

The article mentions that “so near-infrared imagery has been overlaid on this photo to provide a swath of browns and oranges.” The “near-infrared” light is light with a slightly longer (redder) wavelength than we can see with our eyes. Using those frequencies of light reveal interesting and useful information about conditions on the ground.

“Tweaked Slightly”….is kind of an understatement. Everything that is brown desert (i.e. Egypt, M.E.) is green, and everything that is full of lush vegetation (i.e. E Africa, Malaysia, etc.) is reddish brown. Are you sure a middle eastern P.R. firm didn’t brush this up?
