I was curious about that, too. Seems a lot of attention if not many people know the "special" stuff on offer there.

I wonder if Apple would do better if it had secret devices you could make special requests for from the Apple Store staff...

There was a Smash Burger opening up nearby when I was last in Michigan, funnily enough. The tagline "That's how we seal in the juices!" made me a little uncomfortable, though, and that and the queues meant I didn't try one. Now I'm kicking myself again.

I've been to In-N-Out a couple times. I really don't get what the hype is all about. It's okay, but I actually prefer Burger King. It's probably just a matter of scarcity masquerading as value.

Now, Del Taco vs. Taco Bell, THERE I'll take the regional chain any day.

Here is the YouTube video I mention above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQowy9DdY8k The guy filming criticizes people for not putting their cars in park, but the annoying thing about the line is that it's constantly moving in stops and starts. Probably worse on your transmission to park than it is on your brakes to stay in drive.

Despite never having eaten in a non-kosher restaurant (or ever tried a cheeseburger of any kind) I still found this article fascinating. One question: were other people waiting 40 minutes - 3 hours for a burger also ordering off the Internet not-so-secret menu? Or were they there for the hype and buying regular cheeseburgers?

Smash Burger is solid. I hit that place on the way back from the Ft. Worth zoo. Great fries, too. I also like Twisted Root, but more for their homemade root beer and cool vibe.

I think another factor which may explain why In-N-Out is so popular is that the really large chains have slowly gotten to the point where they are just awful now. They have compromised the food quality in favor of speed and efficiency. For example, Burger King pre-cooks their burgers and simply micro-waves the patties to heat them up now. For some of the other large chains, they still cook the meat when you order it ...but from frozen patties.

Anyway, I agree that In-N-Out is nothing special. Just a hair better than some of the more common alternatives. Since I know you're in the Dallas area you should try out Smash Burger if you get the chance. I haven't tried Five Guys yet so I don't know how they compare. And if you feel like dining-in for a fancier burger there's the former Mansion chef John Tesar's new burger bar called The Commissary. Be prepared to wait a stupid long time for your order to get to your table though. Good burger, but I really hope they work out their kitchen times. Also, I HATE having to valet at any restaurant... much less for a burger.

Serious eats link is dead... grass is definitely greener here. Never found In-n-out to be worth the hype. I'd love to try Whataburger or Five Guys if ever I'm in your neck of the woods. Agree on the fries though, terrible! No preservatives--just fresh cut potatoes, fried in vegetable oil (no animal fat).
