Great article! I don’t necessarily agree with all the points the author is trying to make, but constantly being bombarded with pictures of food on social networks does get really annoying. And yes, most of the time the pictures are quite disgusting.

I find it quite ironic how people are telling the author to ignore the pictures of food; while at the same time everyone is bitching about the article. If you don’t like it – don’t read it morons.

As an amateur turned professional food photographer. I have to disagree with you. While 30 years ago it may have been perfectly acceptable to add soap to a milkshake, it’s not common practice now. When people buy something they want it to look the same as the photo they see(whether it’s a recipe or food product). While it’s the job of the stylist to make the food look its best, gone are the days that raw turkeys are painted to look perfect.

For me, I started out snapping food I made and posting it on a blog. People who wanted to see them had the option to come and look (I never forced anyone to follow my blog or my tweets). My photos were pretty bad, but that’s how people learn. We experiment, friends tell us our photos suck, and we make the next one better. Five years later I make a living taking photos of food.

If you don’t like seeing photos of food, unfollow the person instead of showing off to the world how counter-culture you are denigrating a hobby that both poster and (most) viewers enjoy.

To the author, along your lines there should be no amateur photography of people on the beach or anywhere else, because in your opinion the only photos worth seeing are the kind the lying media shows that have been adulterated and couldn’t possibly exist in the real world. Do we really need to see airbrushed models? You live in a fake world.

I suppose this article is meant to be humorous, but really it comes off as an angry little rant. While I don’t necessarily disagree with your position about horribly taken photos of food, I certainly disagree with the sentiments that people should stop taking photos of their meals because they are “horrible”. Some people are born with great eyes for photography, while others have to work at it. I’m not going to get into “photography is a form of self expression”, B.S., but ironically, this article is about as pointless as terrible food photography. Firstly, you offer no resources how to make food photography better. Secondly, there are no examples of what you consider “great” food photos. Lastly, you contradict yourself numerous times on this article with you view on food and photography. Do us all a favor and stop writing articles like this. Stop. Stop. Just…stop.

You complain that people make a special thing out of a meal, why? People can be into food but they can’t necessarily be into an empty commuter road. That’s a ridiculous comparison. I once took a photo of an amazing mountain road I’d just ridden on my motorbike. I once took a photo of an amazing meal I was about to eat. Both were actually just to remember them. I may have posted one of them on facebook. Why does it make you so angry?

Eating is not like sleep, or commuting. Maybe it is for you but if so then I pity you and maybe you aren’t quite the ‘foodie’ you say you are (even though you say you hate the term then profess yourself to be one without using it).

In the UK and in London in particular we have a great food scene. You obviously have a few issues with food and maybe your relationship with it isn’t particularly healthy…that seems to be a fairly common issue for Americans (not being racist or discriminatory, you yourself point out how bad the food situation is in your home state) but lots of us are very much ‘into’ food and have a great relationship with it…and yes, it is OK for us to be ‘into’ food and even document even thought we’re not professional journalists.

Yeah but people don’t take photos of food to produce an amazing image they take it to show people what they’re eating. It’s like saying ‘I just had a great meal at…’ but with more description. Or ‘I just saw the most disgusting thing ever…chicken fried bacon!’ but again with more description.

Not sure what’s more annoying anyway, people who post pointless pictures of food or people who write pointless articles about pointless photos of food.

in the article, no? first he says that the food pics nauseate him, then
he says they make him wanna eat. he says ppl relate to social updates
about food and get obsessed with food, then he says that food updates
are “boring”. had to hold on to my hat, reading this article. phew!

the thing is… american food do not deserved to be captured by camera.
1st) learn that there are different continents in the world
2nd) find France.
3rd) order something local. (no.. pizza is from a more southern country called Italy, and French Fries is not local)
4th) now you understand why food must be captured by camera
5th) repeat the above in Japan. (sweet and sour pork/fried rice are chinese cuisines… just for your reference)

Not impressed with your article, dude. Obviously bad photos suck, but your personal rant against food photos on a widely-read website is not applicable. If you don’t want to see photos of food, unfollow that user or hide their updates from your news feed. I think you should send this as a message to your Facebook friends, instead of addressing SlashGear readers at large on their “lousy, uninteresting” photo posts.
