Sony behind on small game innovation?! Perhaps you haven't been on PSN in a few years, but there are tons of this. Maybe it's because their system exclusives are so epic that it may over shadow their MINI's and other PSN games.

Just about every worthy XBL game is also available on PSN
(Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim, Braid, Sam & Max, Back to the Future Gameisodes, Limbo, etc..) Then you have amazing indie exclusives such as Flower, Soldner X (1/2), PixelJunk *.*, Neo-Geo Station, and many, many more...

I don't agree at all.

I think there was never ever better time for Nintendo.

Wii = complete success (best selling home console for years)
DS series = complete success (best selling handheld for years)

3DS...we will see, but...
Wii U...I'm already decided to buy it (I waited 2 years till I bought Wii)

There is always going to be a place for Nintendo, and I say this as an Xbox gamer. I think if anyone needs to worry it's Sony. PlayStation is way behind on a lot of the small games innovation, a lot of Indie games have got me actually playing again.

I thought I was growing out of gaming, but the industry was growing away from me. I rarely pick up a new game these days and bother to finish it if it takes longer than a day or two. Then I started playing the Indie games, old fashioned RPG's pixel art and 8 bit tunes. Real unashamed fantasy stories, beautiful game artwork and unexpected plots. They were funny, new and have got me back into gaming.

So Sony, get into it or get left behind. You used to be the most open platform of the lot.

When we had the Wii I found out my daughter was sitting down and playing the games
and getting no exercise, so I decided to get the xbox 360 kinect and
now she is getting exercise and she loves it. She loves playing
fantastic pets and kinect animals, it is more hands on, I like it
because your the controller and because she can't sit down and play
sport games. I think Wii needs to come out with
something to make people the controller. Some sitting down games are ok,
but it is not healthy to sit down like that all the time. I know the wii is intended to get exercise but you can still sit and play. However I do like the wii too and the games, but I like kinect more.

Nintendo is cyclic. After the n64 ran out of steam people said the same thing. This was about the time nintendo released the diskdrive which never was sold in the USA.

Nintendo simply needs to make a HD console to stay competative. The current gen is 2 flavors of the same games. You either like your ice cream with a hint of Master Chief or with a dash of Kratos.

I would be worried about XBOX and PS because of the trend toward convergence in all things digital media related. Sure, maybe XBOX and PS have great games that are device independent, but that's their problem. Once games don't need a specific hardware, then the likes of XBOX and PS open themselves up to the huge competition that is the MMO world that is currently experienced through your basic PC. Nintendo makes their profits from making devices that allow gamers (and if Nintendo is smart also other non-gaming media consumers) access to digital media with immersive technologies. Yeah, the Wii's gaming selection sucked but it did open up previously unserved demographics to accessing media content through its technology. All they need to do is get back to NES days with tons of awesome games and they dominate the gaming market completely.

One problem with the 3DS is Nintendo shot themselves in the foot by releasing slightly revised editions of their portables every 2-3 years or so going back to the very first gameboy color. The original Gameboy was supported for 10 successful years before Nintendo finally added color, but now we've experienced how many gameboy advances, how many DS's? All the same software jus constant hardware upgrades, new screen sizes etc.

I think some people are just tired of it and afraid to jump in on a portable from them if it is only going to be upgraded a year or two from now anyway.

Kids don't have money. I know they can wine at their parents until they pay, but if you focus on kids, you focus on CRAP with a CRAP margin. See what became of Fisher Price? Nowhere near the stuff they used to make 30 years ago, because all others sell crap, you have to sell crap too.
Nintendo was a serious gaming company. Today they are a crap TOY maker for kids. Same league as the VTech Smile, but way overpriced.

I think that a clear market leader, that has always been an innovator, expander(which is healthy for the whole industry) and exciting player in this console business for both audiences, gamers and regular people, is NOT in deep trouble.

Nintendo doesn't have to worry about anything else, but the HD-Ready hegemony in media, that has been growing old even faster than Wii lately. Nintendo has been able to make some very healthy business. Even during GameCube -era. Why would it change now, when they have made this freakishly mad amounts of money from Wii?

Instead. I think, Nintendo is in interesting place now. It has many very viable strategies to choose from.

It could easily produce a console, that is vastly more powerfull, than HD-Ready consoles and still be able to price it affordably, even with some interesting new input method, to make its launch look like a blood fest for sharks, and keep selling it at an accelerating pace, forcing their competition to change their plans and act sooner than what they had prepared and make a price cut at the dawn of competitions launch and gather 3rd party support like never before.

Or they could make SO much more powerfull console, that HD-Ready consoles just wouldn't appeal any more, especially because the new input methods, forcing their competition to change their plans and act sooner than what they had prepared and make a price cut at the dawn of competitions launch and gather 3rd party support like never before.

Nintendo is in lead, and it can chose, what it does and other has to act accordigly. Nintendo is the one, who's doing the shooting and others are doing the dancing.

The new controller might be so interesting, again, that the competition might not be able to economically fit something like that in their console bundle. Nintendo might have been able to cut from R&D costs, again, in traditional hardware and concentrate on new input methods, which might be in icreasingly important role in console hardware business, because graphics are already at this state. Yamauchi said, that they'd jump one generation over with GameCube and a couple of peripherals...and let see now...actually they just did it. They might have their console launch already in pretty mature state, and they might even have some games in good shape already. The graphics are already so satisfying, that Nintendo might be able to use tuned up existing hardware, again, and other might be forced to use much more money in R&D to excuse their generational leap, and this time the competition might not be able to woo even HC-peasantry anymore just with more powerfull traditional hardware. The differences in graphics might not be so painfully visible after breaking the Full-HD barrier. Nintendo might be able to launch new generation a year or two even before competition. Thats might be too long lead for competition to try to catch up.

Too little
too late. Bought the Wii and balance board and a plethora of other accessories 1
year ago. My kids don't like it, you need this device for that game, another device
for another game, a cover for the controller,
a nun-chunk, plug this, plug that, replace batteries, aarrgggghhh… Recently
got rid of it and bought an Xbox360 with Kinect. My kids just loooove it and I got
a decent media center with it to access all my media from the PC. Peace of
mind.

Browser handles pretty well and does flash. I'd say its easier to use than browsing with a sixaxis controller, but that could be my ~biased~ opinion.

"homebrew/hacked units can do all this", you have a hacked wii that can play Blu-Ray?

There's a lot of crap the Wii deserves to get and then there's the crap that doesn't really apply to making it a better system.

My beef with the system was games. Quality is subjective- but there weren't many games that made use of the 8 controller ports. Even five players would have been something over the gamecube.

The ps3 can theoretically handle 7 players, but as far as I know, no game makes use of that either.

Anyone reading this may be wondering, what the big deal is- bottomline was that this was one of the features mentioned before the wii launched. This was one of the many promises this system held and still went underutilized along with other features. If more muscle was put under the hood of the wii for HD gaming, would there really be any change? Would internet browsing and Blu-Ray quench your thirst for a better gameplay environment?

Didn't think i'd have to point out the obvious, but the Wii's there for playing games, not browsing the web or watching DVDs. That's always been Nintendo's focus & probably always will be.
In terms of gameplay and sheer fun, especially with friends, MS and Sony's products don't come close imho.

The secret to happiness is low expectations.

Damn that's a funny reply. Nintendo has been so wrapped up in enjoying their multi-year windfall from the Wii that they've lost touch. again. Look at the stupid crap their execs say in public. Can you browse the web worth a damn on Wii? No. the browser is outdated, and the plugins are still crap. Can you slide in a DVD or a Blu-Ray and just watch? nope. (granted they have free netflix access, but it low-res) are any of these a HARDWARE limitation? Nope. Homebrew/hacked units can do all this, but the stock one cannot.
This is a company unwilling to invest in making their current customers happier and look for new market share. Doesn't matter where your home is, this is called resting on your laurels.Instead they try and milk the 3D fad with a crappy, expensive unit that offers very little in the way of additional gameplay value add. Meh. Hopefully they will expand on the their somewhat decent online service and add some real features people want into the next generation of hardware they show.

There goes another Microsoft paid off stooge trying to please his grand wizard bill. Look here! Nintendo is the only real gaming company that cares about the product the release to their customers. As greedy as investors are they too are happy that nintendo's Wii was the only real profit making machine of the three from launch till todate. Nintendo made $70 after all taxes on every Wii sold from release day 2006. All they need to keep us hooked is space out the release globally of Xenoblade, pandora's box, give us last story this June with a massive online co-op, then release Zelda the skyward sword next year and we shall all smile. New IP to be announced at E3 so what more can you say? Hate how American journalist want to white ball foreign competitors even when they said competitors acually make products designed masterfully.

Nintendo is clearly addressing the decline of the Wii by aggressively moving ahead with "Project Cafe," which will (hopefully) be an even more powerful console than either the 360 or PS3. The dearth of software for the Wii is what's leading to its steady decline in demand. Of course, 3rd party developers avoid the Wii like the plague (which, to be fair, is due to the fact that Nintendo fans have historically avoided 3rd party titles just as readily. Just look at Mad World, No More Heroes, etc.). What's most problematic, however, is that even in-house titles are few and far between nowadays. Without a library full of quality titles, the Wii (and perhaps even the 3DS) is little more than a novelty item that most people use infrequently.

I just got deja vu, because this is what is said about Nintendo towards the end of EVERY hardware generation. This kind of FUD has loomed since the SNES days, and it's no more true today than it was then.

And fwiw, the Gamecube and N64 may not have outsold their competitors, but Nintendo has always come away with a tidy profit on each console, which is still a good position for Nintendo to be in.

Bring on Project CAFE, I know it'll be done right!
