Dodge's craziest number for the Challenger SRT Hellcat is the mpg

Dodge's Challenger SRT Hellcat made headlines for its 707HP engine, but its efficiency that might be the most astonishing thing about the ridiculously powerful muscle car. The coupé can certainly muster up an impressive turn of speed, as we discovered after taking it out on the track, but according to the EPA you can also get 22mpg out of it.

Admittedly, that 22mpg is only if your right foot is a whole lot lighter than it might be when you're pushing the Hellcat to its extremes. Still, it's a surprisingly high number for a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, and even Dodge itself was expecting around 20mpg.

Even if you opt for the purist-pleasing six-speed manual transmission rather than the eight-speed automatic, you'll still get 21mpg on the highway, the EPA says.

Dodge's argument is that Challenger SRT Hellcat owners will be able to lash their car around the track – embarrassing Ferrari and Lamborghini drivers in the process – at the weekend, and then drive back home in relative frugality.

Of course, they might want to save some of that unspent gas money to put toward replacing the tires.

Still, for under $60k it's a more than capable showing from the outlandish coupe, and it'll be interesting to see how close Dodge's Charger SRT Hellcat sedan – which uses the same engine – gets to that miles-per-gallon figure once the EPA has had its way with it.
