This author is a fucking idiot. The real price of an iPhone is 650, and if you buy on a contract like an idiot you pay around 1,000 for your terrible smartphone. Meanwhile the real price of an iPod touch is only 200.

I love my iPod Shuffle, its tiny and great for when I’m at the gym. Plus I can leave it hooked up in the car so its always available. Plus if I break it, its only $49 to replace.

The family of iPods are still quite useful for many people. And, corporations and such still find them to be great incentives and give-aways. I still carry my iPod Touch and Fatboy Nano just for music and video as well as a secondary for quick look up of some old numbers on the contact lists as I don’t always synch my iPhone, I mostly just plug it in to AC to charge it. I also have a 2Gen shuffle for use on my scooter, that I attach to a velcro dot–works great.

Good question. I’ve had many iPods in the past, but any smartphone IS an MP3 player, so unless you still use a dumbphone or need a super-tiny music player, they are quickly becoming redundant.

You’re about $600 off.
Plus, you can’t send or receive calls/texts/data without a WiFi network on an iPod. The iPhone 4S also has double the storage (16GB vs 8GB) of an iPod Touch for the $199 version.

I still prefer phone for “phoning” and iPod for listening. Same as camera for pictures, washing machine for laundry….etc. As all universal gadgets can do all-but-nothing.

You seem to be assuming that everyone can either afford or wish to pay the cell phone carriers $90 per month for a smart phone contract. Maybe you think that all parents will buy their teenagers smart phones. Personally, I like my iPod for the gym, it’s small and light.

The only reason I bought an iPod Classic is because its 160gb!!!

I mean… the idea of the iPod Touch and iPhone (I had one before), are cool but… I prefer having my iPod PLUS my phone, since I cannot get more than 32gb (most of the time, i know 64 is also available) of music in it. You know… some of us still prefers playing music EVERYWHERE (including ur friends’ houses and at ur gfs or w/e).

Set aside… it IS true that most people DOESN’T need the old iPods. But I really would like to see Apple adding memory as Archos does…

Well I wish the ipod would last forever like the classic cd player or tape player – however the truth is it does not. The Batt eventually dies and then the memory or HDD from the classic ipod. And APPLE shrugs its shoulders and says buy another…. OMG why should we continually fork over money to APPLE?

Iphone one battery. Ipod one battery. Listening to music on my iphone uses battery for my phone. Where if I listen to music on my ipod, it doesnt drain power from the same device i used for communication and work. Simple.

Don’t tell me what I need. I will never give up my iPod. I like all my music in one place. And my 160gig is getting full… ‘Playlists’ just don’t work for me. So until they can pack that much Flash memory into the Phone, my iPod will not go away. Also, the touch interface for navigating tunes sucks. Gimme my wheel anyday.

Try making a fair price comparison and we might take this article seriously. Even AT&T’s ‘Free’ iPhone will cost at least $1359.79 — the price of a 64GB iPhone 4S with a two year contract,. Compare that with $364 for a 64GB iPod which can make free calls over Skype + $213 for a two-year contract with a basic fliphone from Tracfone. You can see why I choose to carry two devices and pay $577 for my two-year package – 42% of the AT&T price. Of course, I don’t get to whip out a flash iPhone 4s to make calls. But I do get a bug-free phone service with much better coverage than any of the iPhone plans that I have seen. Do the math.

I’ve had Nokia lumia 800, samsung galaxy 2, and a few more smart phone that I can’t remember the names of. I am a gadgit mad pensioner. I gave the smartphones to grandchildren. I will never give away my ipod touch. No contract. Download lots of films, videos, you tubes, music at no extra cost. And even with my old eyes it is easy to view. And is the right size and weight,
It also has now less mug-able value and less pain to replace. Ha, Ha..
I too have a cheap pay as you go. I watch mostly documentaries of all sorts, which is ideal for the ipod touch screen not forgetting the BBC pod-casts.

Are you kidding? Crazy? I have had an Ipod for 10 years now and go nowhere without it. I have 27gb of music/videos on it. I have an Ipad 2, Kindle fire, and a Galaxy Nexus, but the ipod fits in my pocket. The ipod does NOT cost me money every month like the Iphone. I for one will have an Ipod as long as they make them, and considering that it saved them from extinction, I hope that they keep making them. I AM ON #4.

Some of us have large music collections. Further, a two year contract makes the iPhone a hell of a lot more expensive. Finally, why would someone get an 8G iPod for $129 when an extra Benjamin would give them 20 times the storage space with the largest iPod?

Roughly a year ago I finally broke down a bought my first iDevice. It was a 32 GB iPod touch and I still absolutely love it. I have a cheap “pay as you go” cell phone to avoid monthly carrier fees and the situation works like a charm for me. I’m now anxiously awaiting the release of the iPad3 and thanks to my experience with my always updated iPod, I’ll have no learning curve to deal with in terms of that product whatsoever. The iPod is a very versatile and powerful little device and I personally never leave home without mine. It’s also a great gateway device for former Windows users and I think that Apple would inevitably lose that little boost in sales that they get from it should it be discontinued.

I just turned my old phone with 32 GB of music into my MP3 player. Took out the sim card and only use it on WiFi and to play music in the car. Work great in this mode.

I too have never bought a smartphone, cuz I don’t care to be tied to an expensive monthly data contract. Love my iPod Classic for the 90GB of music I can carry around everywhere, and love my iPod Nano 8GB for jogging, hiking and beach…!!!

VOIP call on Wifi is handy if you don’t have good wireless access on a daily basis, and I don’t – plus the 2k or more cost of ownership for an iPhone makes the iPod a device that is still useful, for some. If I absolutely needed a cell plan I would get the iPhone.

None of the other music-storage devices (iPhone, iPad) have this kind of
capacity, and they are being used for other things, as well.

Until car stereos can handle much higher storage capacities on their
internal drives, I will need a functional iPod to tote my music
around…and even when the car units can handle more, I am still waiting
for the “solid-state” drives (essentially flash drives…all memory in
iPhone and iPad) to come down in price, and go up in capacities.

15.4 million iPods sold last quarter. Decline, maybe, but obviously there are still plenty of people out there who need/want them.
