You know the same thing happens with Gas Tanks.

IE the manufacture says this car has a 10 gallon tank, but you also have another gallon of gas in the fuel lines, and then another gallon in the neck that goes to the filler valve.

However no one mentions that if you fill the tank up to capacity that thermal expansion will cause the gas to overflow out of your tank.... that doesn't stop people from giving the pump the old tap tap just to get the cost rounded off to the nearest dollar amount.

For what its worth even more, your not supposed to let a tank run dry either because it messes up the fuel gauge. Granted this is mechanical and not chemical or electrical.

I'm an electrical engineer - I'm missing something here, or something is very wrong. According to my math:

The iPad must take 23.2 hours to reach a full charge. The iPad uses a cheap parts that increase the charge time by 6 hours.
Here's why I think so:

The iPad's battery is 11.6Ah. At the lithium polymer nominal voltage of 3.7V, that's 43Wh of total energy.

USB, by design, is capable of putting out no more than 0.5A, 5V (that's 2.5W)

That gives us a charge time of 17.2 hours! Already doesn't look good. I don't care what the battery meter says - the battery can't magically charge faster than that because USB simply can't deliver power any faster.

However, some of that power is being wasted - converted to heat.

There is a certain type of cheap power control device called a linear regulator. They are small, cheap, stable, reliable, wasteful, and a very stupid thing to use in a low-power device. These regulators control voltage by wasting the voltage difference between the input (USB, 5V) and output (battery, 3.7V). This means you compute with amps:

11.6Ah battery, 0.5A power source = 23.2 hour charge time!
1.3V voltage difference * 0.5A charging rate = 0.65W of wasted heat

The waste is approximately equivalent to the heat from one incandescent Christmas light, but the iPad seems to be getting warmer than that... It's a wonder the iPad ever charges at all.

Still no valid comparison, as it doesn't address what is expected from the device, you might as well compare to a super computer that requires liquid nitrogen to keep cool.

It doesn't matter if another device gets hotter unless it's the same type of device and ARM based tablets are low powered devices.

If anything the new iPad should just be compared to the iPad 2.

More likely it's to do with protecting the battery from the dangers of over charging. Lithium batteries can heat up very quickly once they reach capacity and can get hot enough to rupture their containment and expose themselves to air, which in turn would cause a chain reaction that's the main danger of lithium batteries.

So chargers are usually set to switch to trickle charge once near capacity and then stop a little after. The 20-80% may be the ideal but one of the selling points is the max run time and they had to increase the battery capacity about 70% just to keep the run times the same as the previous iPad 2. So they're still pushing the limits...

This particular battery type though doesn't have a high heat tolerance. So heat issues could be a problem for the battery and is likely why people have reported charging issues under certain conditions as Apple probably set fail-safes to help protect the battery.

Not a good comparison because laptops are also designed to handle more heat. They have active cooling and don't depend on passive cooling. Not to mention the iPad is a sealed device that further limits cooling and so relies on being low powered enough to not generate more heat than it can handle.

Not that it matters but laptop cooling has also improved, especially for ULV solutions that can vent most heat out one side and can keep the system relatively cool to the touch even after hours of use.

The main concern with the iPad is everything is packed together in a sealed space and the battery takes up the bulk of the space and is the one component you don't want getting too hot!

So forget about how it feels, the question is whether is it getting too warm internally for any of its parts like the battery... shortening of the battery life being just one of many possible consequences.

You're making some pretty far fetched claims man...based on nothing. If aluminum cases are bad then why are so many laptop manufacutres moving to aluminum (HP, Asus, etc)

if ANY engineer will tell you that aluminum is bad then I should be able to find a lot of evidence supporting your claims...but a simple search turns up NO evidence supporting your claims

Now is your chance to link us to something that proves your point....I bet you wont be able to

What are you talking about? Name me one company that doesnt seek to create a better product than their last model? Every company does this. In fact, Apple updates their products a mere once a year, so if you consider this "feeding on consumerism" then companies like samsung and htc would be even more guilty of this since they release a multitude of upgrades to their devices several times a year

But none of this matters because your point doesnt make sense, "feeding on consumerism" aka selling a product is what successful companies do

those all aluminium devices can make a good looking exterior, but ask any electronics design engineer, aluminium is not best material for a phone or tablet. Apple does it just to make their products look magical and different. On one side they make false claims that A5x is faster then tegra3 and Qualcomm MSM8960, and on the same time they say that if you play a graphics intensive game for 1 hour, you can not complain for temperature. They should learn something from Qualcomm etc who is making some amazing processors which perform better than A5x and still produce less heat- or better Apple should actually switch to Qualcomm for their main application processor, Greed to not pay anybody and keep all profits with company is making their products inferior..

lol.. you really said that :)
I think the blame is to be shared by Apple. first they decided to not share their profits by chipset makers and tried to do everything on their own - now they are seeing that they are not able to develop A4/A5 processors with that power efficiency as other mainline semiconductor companies can do. They have to move the power of their A5/A6 processors to compete with other vendor's product but problem is that they can not make a chip as power efficient as Qualcomm and TI. Apple is overall an OEM and they can never do what specialized semiconductor companies are able to do.

The sweet spot for lithium batteries is in the 20-80% range. Discharging it all the way and charging it all the way reduces the number of usable cycles you will get. It's quite possible that the inaccurate 100% charge on the new iPad is meant to protect the battery. It could reduce the amount of replacement batteries Apple stores need to issue.

I knock Apple for a lot of unsavory practices and decisions, but this isn't one of them. People are being pretty ridiculous I think.

Apple owners pay a premium and they fuss and complain a lot when things aren't perfect. People forget that the "Wtf no flash?" Echo chamber began with iphone early adopters.

Have you seen the reports of insane battery life on idevice since the last update?? It's freaking amazing! It's a result of much bitching and complaining to Apple. It wasn't bad before, just not up to par... Now It's better than ever.

I absolutely love my battery life. I'm having a problem with getting mine to charge fully, as it stops at about 80-85% for some reason, and I'm still enjoying a full two days of use, with brightness at about 60% and around 4-5 hours a day. I have no problems with heat or with battery life, I'm on a 16GB wifi if that matters.

The whole overheating thing is just stupid anyway, go play any kind of CPU intensive program on a laptop, and see how hot that thing gets in just minutes. My laptop would get to the point of being uncomfortable through jeans in maybe a half hour during simple we browsing. iPad gets Luke-warm after a full hour of netflix, Infinity Blade and web browsing, and keeps its battery as well lol

i dont have an ipad, but it seems that people are demanding more and more and apple has had to push the technology to its limits so it simply has to be accepted or just wait (i know it is hard to do)

except for the battery charge indicator,[ im not so sure about that one??] they should make a patch for that.
