IE the manufacture says this car has a 10 gallon tank, but you also have another gallon of gas in the fuel lines, and then another gallon in the neck that goes to the filler valve.

However no one mentions that if you fill the tank up to capacity that thermal expansion will cause the gas to overflow out of your tank…. that doesn’t stop people from giving the pump the old tap tap just to get the cost rounded off to the nearest dollar amount.

For what its worth even more, your not supposed to let a tank run dry either because it messes up the fuel gauge. Granted this is mechanical and not chemical or electrical.

The iPad must take 23.2 hours to reach a full charge.The iPad uses a cheap parts that increase the charge time by 6 hours.
Here’s why I think so:

The iPad’s battery is 11.6Ah.  At the lithium polymer nominal voltage of 3.7V, that’s 43Wh of total energy.

USB, by design, is capable of putting out no more than 0.5A, 5V (that’s 2.5W)

That gives us a charge time of 17.2 hours!  Already doesn’t look good.  I don’t care what the battery meter says – the battery can’t magically charge faster than that because USB simply can’t deliver power any faster.

However, some of that power is being wasted – converted to heat.

There is a certain type of cheap power control device called a linear regulator.  They are small, cheap, stable, reliable, wasteful, and a very stupid thing to use in a low-power device.  These regulators control voltage by wasting the voltage difference between the input (USB, 5V) and output (battery, 3.7V).  This means you compute with amps:

11.6Ah battery, 0.5A power source = 23.2 hour charge time!
1.3V voltage difference * 0.5A charging rate = 0.65W of wasted heat

The waste is approximately equivalent to the heat from one incandescent Christmas light, but the iPad seems to be getting warmer than that…  It’s a wonder the iPad ever charges at all.

Truth is the new iPad runs at about the same temperature than a transformer Prime or a Galaxy Tab in some cases even cooler. So yes this partícular ‘problem’ has been taking out of proportions as usual.

It doesn’t matter if another device gets hotter unless it’s the same type of device and ARM based tablets are low powered devices.

If anything the new iPad should just be compared to the iPad 2.

So chargers are usually set to switch to trickle charge once near capacity and then stop a little after.  The 20-80% may be the ideal but one of the selling points is the max run time and they had to increase the battery capacity about 70% just to keep the run times the same as the previous iPad 2.  So they’re still pushing the limits…

This particular battery type though doesn’t have a high heat tolerance.  So heat issues could be a problem for the battery and is likely why people have reported charging issues under certain conditions as Apple probably set fail-safes to help protect the battery.

Not that it matters but laptop cooling has also improved, especially for ULV solutions that can vent most heat out one side and can keep the system relatively cool to the touch even after hours of use.

The main concern with the iPad is everything is packed together in a sealed space and the battery takes up the bulk of the space and is the one component you don’t want getting too hot!

So forget about how it feels, the question is whether is it getting too warm internally for any of its parts like the battery…  shortening of the battery life being just one of many possible consequences.

I knock Apple for a lot of unsavory practices and decisions, but this isn’t one of them.  People are being pretty ridiculous I think.

Have you seen the reports of insane battery life on idevice since the last update?? It’s freaking amazing! It’s a result of much bitching and complaining to Apple. It wasn’t bad before, just not up to par… Now It’s better than ever.

The whole overheating thing is just stupid anyway, go play any kind of CPU intensive program on a laptop, and see how hot that thing gets in just minutes. My laptop would get to the point of being uncomfortable through jeans in maybe a half hour during simple we browsing. iPad gets Luke-warm after a full hour of netflix, Infinity Blade and web browsing, and keeps its battery as well lol

except for the battery charge indicator,[ im not so sure about that one??] they should make a patch for that.
