They don’t need to convince people. Either, A) They will buy an iProduct because they feel they need one (iSheep, just prefer the product, or whatever reason), or B) They want an 8MP sensor because phones have them.

My Galaxy S2 has an 8MP sensor, so why can’t a larger device using the same system have it? Why can’t the iPad, the competing tablet product, marketed as a premium device, have an 8MP sensor? If Apple wasn’t to put an 8MP sensor in, it would be a bad move and likely cost them some credibility (although, it likely wouldn’t affect there bottom line).

As well, they are giving the iPad3, if rumors are to be believed, a retina display. I can’t fathom them making sure a costly upgrade and not make a similar bump to the camera tech. I switched to the android platform and I am happy with it because it suits my needs. I’ve had friends make the opposite switch for the same reason. However, while the camera likely wouldn’t be the deciding factor, if the iPad was to only have a 5MP sensor, when customers expect the norm to be 8MP now, it will definitely cause the customer to pause and consider the alternatives again.

This is the 2nd article I’ve seen asking if we really ‘need’ an 8MP camera in the next iPad3. I don’t understand why this is even an issue. If it doesn’t significantly change the consumer’s price point, then why the heck not.

There used to be a saying that went something like ‘the best camera is the one thats on you’. I think it should go more like ‘the best camera is the one thats currently in your hand(s)’

Nope. But, if apple adds, it’ll promote as if it’s de-facto standard and guess what, people thinks there must be some truth if apple says and the world knows what the competitor does…We’ve ended up with such features as next-gen features all because of some one does good marketing – no real requirements just hype it, sell it. If they add, I can say for sure someone will use it to shoot full length film – just for promotion sake.

Yes, Apple had to put an 8 MP camera on the iPad3–even if no one uses it. If you want to be viewed as the leader, which Apple obviously does, then you can’t put out junk. The rear-facing LESS than 1 MP camera was junk. An 8 MP camera won’t be enough for me to trade in my 2 for a 3(?), though the thought of a retina display does intrigue me. At any rate, if Apple wants to command premium prices, it really has to provide premium value. So, it had to upgrade the camera.

I, for one, will make excellent use of a better camera. Compared to iphone4, the iPad camera has been absolutely worthless for OCR of captured docs. One of my major apps for iThings has been to try to translate Chinese docs, and iPad was a total loss on that front. Hooray for autofocus!

Very true. A 1920×1080 resolution screen is a just over 2 megapixel image. Unless the image sensor is dramatically larger or of much higher quality, there won’t be much difference.

Its part of Apples plans to get their ibots to get out on the forums saying your tablet is crap as it has a <8meg camera.

Then if some other tablet comes out with an 8 meg camera (I know they are out already) the ibots will start crowing "your just copying Apple.."

apple is for creative people, photography is a creative art… done? I’m sure they’ll try to tie in the camera and retina display on both the ipad AND the iphone 4s, and say they can be used together to be “the next generation of photographer”.

Many apps are integrated with the camera which you didn’t mention. Take fatbooth for example. On that sizescreen and 8 megapixel will be truely amazing along side the retina display.

They are also adding the compass and gyro from the 4S to accomplish an “Augmented Window on Reality”.

Apple will explain the need for the high-mp resolution with a new app or program feature that will use Augmented Reality to a whole new level. It will wow the socks off everyone… Just my guess.
