I, for one, am fascinated by this idea.

I attended an Open Source conference about a month ago, and one of the talks was about how Intel processors are practically in the same class of energy-use as incandescent light bulbs: an Intel-based server farm can be (and have been) used to heat buildings during the winter. ARM processors are poised to dramatically change server farms.

As I have thought about this, I have concluded that those Intel-based computers I have a difficult time giving up are even more obsolete than I realized...and I began to wonder if I could get an ARM laptop. This is the closest thing I can see towards that possibility; the second-closest is to get a tablet or a smartphone, root it, and then install Linux on it.

So I hope that this project continues on forward. Even if it never gets to the point where it becomes a viable business proposition, it would be nice to be able to have information on how to put together your own laptop. (As for "customization", putting out open plans means you can tweak them to your heart's content! So I would consider such a laptop to be *very* customizeable!)

If all the parts and software are already picked out to be "open", then its not custom anymore for anyone else, is it?

What does this device offer that is not available already?
Where does the external shell come from?
How big is the whole device?
Very cool, maybe. If they won't build it I will?
Or is it just because he can, and why not try?
Peace
