I don’t know about where you live, but here in Indiana it has been scorching hot for weeks (months?) on end. Everyone I know is trying to think of new ways to keep themselves cool during these hot days. Here’s a cheap way to use some everyday items to make a really cheap A/C unit.

DIY USB A/C

Video after the jump

Basically you just need a can with a lid, a small fan, a CD, ice and a USB cord. It may not yield the most professional-looking results but who cares? It keeps you cool.

The video will give you all of the instructions you should need to whip up one of these A/C units. It’s powered by USB, so it’ll be perfect for keeping you cool at your desk.

Video No Longer Available, sorry for repeating that guy’s post, just felt 2 people saying the same thing would make you look into it.

The worst part is that I had just finished getting all the materials…

Unfortunately all we know is that it was removed because the person uploading it violated the ToS on YouTube.

If you have all of the parts I believe now you need to drill holes in the CD, then drill holes about midway down the can and insert screws in the holes. Drop in the CD so they rest on the screws. Then cut out a hole in the top of the can and mount your fan to the lid.

He doesn’t actually go through the steps of wiring the USB cord to the fan, so you’re on your own there. But once you have that done, just drop in the ice cubes on top of the CD, put on the lid and plug it in.
