Various… several genres.

Platformers, shooters, adventure, RPG, several, good story and decent gameplay are important.
Not big into JRPGs, strategy, or “casual” type games. Don’t really do the “Multiplayer” thing either. With friends around the house, sometimes, but not online very often if much at all. Never had the xbox gold service, and I got my xbox 360 not long after launch. (same with the original xbox) PS3 allowed free multiplayer, but still rarely played more than a few hours for any particular title.

If you did so much research why didn’t you point out all the bad arguments about the game and didn’t bother telling any of the good? Like how you forgot there are two auction houses, one for real money and one for gold. And how there were web sites and still are today for diablo2 where you got the same things. Reading you reminded me why i don’t watch the mass media, too much bias nonsense. Ill stick to Total Biscuit for my game news.

I would say half that is enough for most games. If developers can’t hook me in the first 24 hours of play, I stop looking for excuses to stay hooked and go elsewhere.

Although I must admit, I only had to play Age of Empires III for about 14 hours before I realized what a suck-a-thon that was.

Not just a higher level. You have to beat the game at least twice, which takes tens of hours each time, to get to that level. People defending the game think it’s acceptable for a game to only start getting good after 20-40+ hours of gameplay.

Counter argument: Having just beat Hell, I’d have to say I am satisfied with my purchase but also let down about a few things. Everyone over-analyzes games now and refuses to enjoy it for the challange! Normal difficulty posed almost no challange whatsoever. Nightmare and Hell are where the game gets good! You have to get strategic with your approach at different types of enemies and situations if you want to survive. Why can nobody enjoy a game for the challenge anymore? Look at older games… was Tetris really as fun as everyone sees it? Same thing OVER AND OVER. Yes, it WAS and IS fun because as you progress it becomes more difficult; requiring more strategy. Same thing with Diablo 3! Same mechanics and gameplay with added difficulty as you progress to make you think. Personally, that’s fun to me.

Get better gear and the entire game is insanely easy. That’s why people beat it in the first week. Make friends and let them feed you gear, oh wait, they’re probably trying to sell those cartoon swords for real money . . . LOL.

Games are supposed to be fun, and I haven’t heard the word fun used to describe inferno at all. I’ve spent weeks in inferno, and all inferno does is check your gear. Once you have gear the gameplay is no different than normal. Having acquired that gear, and reverting back to a normal level gameplay, it feels like an even bigger waste of time. With a character that can progress in Act3 inferno, you can almost 1 shot, usually 2-3 shot, elites in Act1 (just like you did on normal). Buying a 1,300 dps weapon felt awesome until I started using it. Guess what, no skill whatsoever to kill those ‘hard’ elites.

Considering the over the top hyperbolic nonsense they used to market and promote the game, reviews like this are inevitable. Its called backlash. They promised a lot of stuff and the only innovation they brought to the table was a real money auction house. Everything else is very lazy, especially considering the experience Blizzard has with skill trees and the complete lack of testing that has led to various patches and nerfs. If they had spent 2-3 years making the game I would be more forgiving of the patches, but ten+ years? What were they doing for the first six years?

There are worst titles, but they weren’t completely over hyped or marketed. Look at all the features Jay Wilson promised us for years and then look at what he actually delivered. Look at all the different types of gameplay videos from Blizzcons. What happened to that game? Then look at the design changes in the last few patches. For all the nonsense leading up to release this has been the most underwhelming release in recent memory. That, plus the decade long wait for a sequel and the author is completely right to call it the laziest route to making a game possible. AAA games should be better than this.

When the things that don’t make sense out number the things that should have made sense (like gameplay, story, and dialogue) then they become that much worse. If the game had more redeeming qualities you wouldn’t fixate on all the other bad decisions. If the author cared about the story, or was busy trying to use skill instead of clicking, then he wouldn’t have had time to think about the stupid bugs.

You are missing the point. You are trying to compare this game to other MMORPG games. This is not one of those. This is an ARCADE game, similar to Gauntlet, of course, but also similar to such old games as Galaga, Tempest, and others, where there the skill is in making it into the next level. Where the whole Diablo series shines is in Hardcore play. In Hardcore, you die, you die, restart at level 1. Therein lies the true heart, fun and core of Diablo III. You expect it to be something it’s not.

Playing on Normal involves no strategy… I agree… Nightmare… not much… Hell… now you need to start planning… and Inferno… FML. Start playing Hardcore if you believe there is no challenge, I did, and it’s way more fun and take much more strategic knowing that you must do everything to avoid every attack possible because all your hard work could end at any second.

WoW continues to be a much more popular and better rated game than Ultima online or Daoc ever was, even at their peaks. Even after 10+ years, Wow has 10 million subscribers that continue to play. Inarguable (because of current reviews, statistics, and practice) most agree Wow is on top of the MMORPG pile…I don’t see anyone rushing to revive Ultima…

Another statement with no real substance…what on earth does ‘no brains’ mean? Are you implying that no thought went in to Uncharted or Assassins Creed? I’m down for debating the merits of these games, but its hard to take you serious when you make such fantastically ignorant statements…especially when you don’t adequately explain your vague positions. Legacy of Kain was a game I much enjoyed playing when it came out, but again..its a game I’ll play every once in a while and then put it away for another few years, whereas most of the other games I’ve mentioned have massive replay value and can hold mine (and many others) attentions for much longer.

Thats a strawman argument. Playing 1-1 for 1000 hours and having an opinion on the entire game is not the same as playing (and beating) Diablo 3 on 1 difficulty and making it through a varying amount on the next difficulty, and then deciding that you don’t like the game. If Mario 3 had another difficulty level in which it took 2 stomps to kill a gumba instead of one, then and only then would your analogy work. Author beat the game and played as much as he needed to of nightmare. He experienced every level and enemy the game has to offer, the only thing that is different is the amount of hp and damage that the enemies do.

Inferno is the same game with much more repetitive battles. Unlike D3, I can beat a 25 man heroic instance on WoW and still want to play that raid for armor drops or to try different variations in boss fights. There is no such compelling factor in D3. I beat it because I paid money for it…not because I thought it was fun to do so. I understand that you like it, and you’re not wrong for doing so, but a quick look at player activity in the last month (as well as a glance at the forums) will show that most don’t like it at all, and generally agree with the authors conclusion…..I def won’t be buying the expansion without waiting for reviews to hit first (if I buy it at all).

Ultima is a better game than WoW so is DAoC, Asherons Call and a slew of other games WoW ripped off. Mass Effect? Assassins Creed? That’s the problem with today’s entertainment, all shiny and polished but nor brains behind the beauty. I’ll take old games like X-Com, Tribes, Planetside, Legacy of Kain, Warlords, etc. over those new Jerry Bruckheimer games any day.
