Destiny player proposes in-game with help from Bungie

Players have been proposing to one another within video games for years now, but this latest story goes way, way beyond using level editing features or arranging in-game items on the ground to spell out the words "will you marry me?" Adriel Wallick and Rami Ismail, both indie game developers, spend a lot of time playing Destiny together, so Wallick managed to convince developer Bungie to help with the in-game proposal by creating unique, equip-able items and adding them to the game just for her use.

First off, Wallace got a special "Proposal" emote, which animates her character getting down on one knee in a traditional posture. The in-game description for this item even includes mentions of Destiny's lore and playable areas: "Will you take me for better or worse, in the Tower or on a patrol, for as long as we both have Light?"

Next came a unique artifact item, which takes the form of none other than an engagement ring. Called the "Ring of Eternity," its description reads: "For Guardians who have found their perfect match." Lastly Bungie went and created a "Letter from Adriel," which could be picked up and read from the game's Postmaster:

"Rami, these last few years have been full of some of the greatest adventures in my life. We've done so many incredible things together, travelled to amazing places, and defeated countless enemies together in many made-up universes.

Rami, these last few years have been full of some of the greatest adventures in my life. We've done so many incredible things together, travelled to amazing places, and defeated countless enemies together in many made-up universes.

Will you marry me?"

Ismail would have been a fool to say anything but 'yes,' however he is a very smart individual.

"Thank you to the games industry, which throughout my life has given me joy, purpose, friendship, community, love – and now a fiancé," Ismail wrote on Twitter after getting the surprise of a lifetime when sitting down to play some Destiny with his partner. "That's like a custom emote, a custom item and two custom artifacts – how did @Bungie even sneak this in without data miners finding it?"

A very good question, indeed. Bungie has remained quiet on the whole thing, minus a few retweets from individuals on the development team. Hopefully they'll share a few details from their side of things in an upcoming weekly news post. In the meantime, a big congratulations to the happy Guardians!
