I am typing this from my xps 13. The lid is made of aluminum and the base is aluminum rimmed with the carbon fiber base. It cold boots remarkably fast! Yes the resolution is not great compared to other ultrabooks but with a screen size of 13.3, it works pretty well for me. Any higher resolution would require reading glasses :-P

I have played with the Asus model and I don't like how much the LCD flexs with the slightest of pressure. The Asus just seems cheap to me. Also, my friend is a Dell certified tech who can order me parts without calling support which is awesome. Good luck with Asus. I had the hardest time RMA'ing a motherboard from them.

In the end, I think both ultrabooks, Asus and Dell, have their pluses and minuses but in the end, you get what you pay for in some way or another and I feel that, for me, the xps is the better laptop.

Nope, not an Air. The Air doesn't update its email while offline, boot up in 1 second, has a much smaller screen and no scalloped keys. I see lappads for the Air because of heat generated, but carbon fiber takes care of yhat here. Oh, it doesn't have garage band, though. Lol! Just Windows (running on 98% of computers still running and sold on 89.7% of every computer sold today

Thie "top" is aluminum, not aluminum painted plastic. The carbon fiber was to make the laptop cool to the touch and very rigid and durable. It works. Backlit keys wth scalloped keys... nice touch. The way it updates email when off, so cool. The boot time SUPER FAST. On in about a second from hibernate. Awesome!

Nice.

Now, if they stuck a 1600x900 display in this, this probably would have been golden. :)

Looking at the display, there is still a lot of Bezel around the display. Why not shrink the computer even more? Edge to Edge display? You probably could almost make this a size of a 11 inch.

To compensate the smaller size, you could make it the same thickness throughout.

Not that great of an "ultrabook." Compare this to a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 and the X220 blows it away. Pricepoint isn't too attractive for what you get. Seriously, no sd/mem card slot? And no ethernet port? And only a 4 hour battery life that is not replaceable? (Source: ComputerWorld hands-on). There are a few better alternatives than this. They aren't selling performance, they are selling the Gorilla Glass screen (which is quite unnecessary imo) and probably the SSD tech, but that's it! The overall case design is uninspired and frankly UGLY (last good looking XPS 13 would be the M1330 imo) and why is it costing 899-1499 again? What are you REALLY paying for? Not performance, not battery life, not the brand, not "elegence." I find it a hard sell to justify buying this laptop over other cheaper alternatives or other more expensive alternatives. The new XPS13 just doesn't do any one thing right (oh wait, it has a Gorilla Glass screen, which is good for...?)
