Actually, a lot of people just want a tablet so that they can sit on the couch and surf the web, read a book, watch a movie, or play a game. Plus a few things like check their calendar, respond to an email, take notes in a meeting. I'm sure there are some people who think it's really important for QuickBooks, Visual Studio, Photoshop, or their enterprise apps to be fully touch enabled, but my guess is that they're more the exception than the rule.

So out of the gate, you sell to people who are fine with having a solid lightweight laptop that also functions effectively as a tablet, but that doesn't perfectly integrate the two scenarios. Over time, the Metro app library builds up -- because people are buying the tablets -- and hopefully more complete touch app support happens. At that point, maybe the ARM tablets become more viable too, because there will be enough Metro apps to make them worthwhile.

The initial market for Win 8 x86 tablets is people who know they need a computer and would also like a tablet, but don't want to have to deal with two devices. You don't have to have perfect tablet support for all apps to win that market. You don't even have to be especially cheap necessarily, because you're weighing against the cost of buying both a laptop *and* a tablet, and having to carry around both of them.

How does that address the point that a Windows 8 tablet is the same for all intent and purposes as a Windows 7 tablet?

People who want Windows on a tablet want it so they can have a touch interface for their Windows applications. Windows 8 does not provide this. For Windows applications, you have to use the desktop UI which is exactly the same as Windows 7. So there is no 'tablety goodness'.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with. Assuming they're going with a 10" screen, I'll probably look elsewhere. My HP Slate (Win7 - there are still driver issues with Win8 preview) has a 9" screen and I'd like it to be smaller rather than larger.

As far as a keyboard, I'm using a Lenovo wired keyboard with a trackstick. It's light weight and big enough for typing plus I don't need space for a mouse. Still, having that integrated in a dock, especially if it came with a spare battery for mobile use, would be nice.

A couple of comments don't seem to understand Windows tablets. I'm assuming the Dell (and most others) will be dual digitizers which react to touch or to a special stylus (n-Trig or Wacom). I find that a stylus is, if anything, more accurate than a mouse and I can access any Office or other software menu/function using it.

Give it a keyboard dock, Asus Transformer style, or even just a stand and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

When you're at your desk, you can use all your legacy apps as easily as on any other laptop. When you're in a meeting or out and about, you still have all the tablety goodness, and you never need to worry about managing multiple devices.
