After months of promises, announcements, and long waits, Dell has finally made good on its word by releasing its first AMD-based desktop computers, breaking its long-standing Intel-only policy. While the new desktops aren’t the most powerful machines currently available, it does show a kind of change in the PC market, where AMD-based machines were hard to come by and very few big-name companies used AMD processors. As for Dell, the two new machines are both entry-level desktop computers, meaning if you’re looking for a super-powerful XPS-level gaming rig, you might need to wait a while longer.

Again, neither desktop is really targeted for power users yet, though more powerful AMD-based systems should be forthcoming soon. Both machines will feature a variety of AMD processors, from the low-end Sempron chips to the higher-eng Athlon 64 X2 processors. The C521 (shown above) will feature integrated graphics, up to 4 GB of RAM, up to 500 GB of hard drive space, and Windows Media Center 2005. The higher-end E521 will feature a true graphics card, more hard drive space, Dell’s drive security, and dual optical drives. Both should be available for order tomorrow, but those looking for a solid AMD gaming rig will need to look elsewhere.
