Remember that piece a couple of weeks ago about Dell’s shipping problems with their new colored Inspiron laptops? It looks Dell has officially owned up to this in their Direct2Dell blog.

Apparently they are having an issue with the quality of the paint used on the laptops which is causing the delay. They have confirmed that the plain black and white models are shipping out in a timely fashion, however, choosing one of the other 6 colors will ensure a long wait time.
On one hand I commend Dell for catching the quality issues and not just shipping them out anyway. Unfortunately, many customers have likely lost faith in you for delaying their shipments. You just launched a huge initiative with your colored notebooks in time for back-to-school, but if you keep it up, students will be taking finals by the time they actually get their notebook. You can bet next time around they’ll be ordering a shiny new HP or Toshiba..

I ordered a plain black 1420 on 8/23/07. ESD is 9/19. The wireless-N cards and screens are delaying the laptops as well.
Blah!
Per your article: “They have confirmed that the plain black and white models are shipping out in a timely fashion…” They’ve lied to you just like they’ve lied to all of their customers. I tried to change my green laptop to white and was told it would also be delayed. I have since canceled and gone with Gateway… at least I can understand their sales and service people so I know what I’m getting!
I understand your frustration JB, believe me, many others do too and i really do hope Dell sort it it quickly.
My company, which orders hundreds of dells per year, has been experiencing serious delays (up to 30 days total) because of what Dell admitted was an “LCD display supply limitation”. Apparantly affecting only the WXGA+ LCD displays and not as much affecting the WXGA displays. I have heard nothing about paint colors on laptops.
