I'm missing something because it seems many here just see this as a service being released on Verizon's wireless service, how about FIOS and web based? I heard FIOS TV could be tied in with XBox Live TV service so couldn't the streaming also be done there as on demand service? Honestly more services need to get into streaming, wish Direct TV would do this so I could get all the NFL games in my house where my landlord will not allow a dish to be installed. TVoip, TV over IP could be the best thing to hit the home and beyond in years...

Holy christ, you're still butthurt that Verizon didn't cave to Apple's demands years ago and get the original iPhone? Yeah, that business decision has been a real disaster for them, with the way they've grown their subscriber base to remain the largest wireless provider in the US, built the nation's first 4G network worth anything, the increased emphasis on their machine to machine operations and all the other "lame" business decisions they've made that has consistently made them the industry benchmark for profitability.

I'm sorry that checkers is more your speed while Verizon likes to play chess, Don, but that's a problem with you, not with Verizon.

Why are they trying to start a streaming service when they already have data limits set in place for their wireless phones and tablets? I just do not get this. As a Verizon customer locked into my contract because I cannot afford to get out of it, I refuse to pay them for streaming a movie to me and the price of data if I go over my limit.

Let's see - I order a movie from Verizon @ 5 PM - it arrives at 7 PM. Ooops, no now it's delayed until 8 PM. But at 8 PM they tell me that the movie is not going to be released to my device because I cannot pay for it with my Google wallet account because ????? it was never included on my phone. So Customer Service, two days later, returns my email and tells me that the movie is rumored to be released in about a week, but they cannot confirm that and the list goes on and on and on ...

Verizon, don't start streaming until you can get a handle on the release dates of your phones = timely, substantiated, honestly communicated, and no BS.

So in arguing that Verizon could easily be success ful in media streaming you point out the one thing that almost guarantees that Verizon will lose: "as long as they can get it and it is inexpensive." I'm not sure if you know of a different company of the same name and are confusing the two, but the very last thing in the world Verizon would EVER be accused of is inexpensive. Which carrier has the highest cell plan costs? Verizon. The highest data plans? Verizon. The highest on contract phone prices? Verizon. The highest ETF? Verizon. They even try to charge you for contact back up on Android phones. Also, pointing out how terrible V-Cast was further hints that Verizon would fail. Because Verizon is the one who designed and dumped loads of money into that "terrible system"

Did everyone forget that they are probably looking to do this over their FiOS system as well? FiOS can 100% handle the streaming to the home and integrate with the wireless carriers LTE devices. This makes PERFECT SENSE for them to jump in.

If they can get a partnership with redbox or another movie mogul, then licensing costs will be lower than starting on their own. Also, it is a game of percentages. IF they can get even a fraction of their current customer base to buy in, then it would be a success. They have the advantage of a large customer base to which they can give free trials to get hooked. Remember, the average consumer does not care where they get their movie from, as long as they can get it and it is inexpensive and easy.

They would just need to do a better job marketing and designing than they did with "V-CAST". That is just a terrible music and movie system.

Their FiOS GUI's and Apps are much better designed.

I would not use their service on my tv or laptop... but my tablet, sure, if the pricing and selection is reasonable. Although I am just as happy using both Amazon and Netflix right now. At the very least, I'd be will to take a look at their content.

I have a hard time reading any of your articles and thinking that you actually know the average consumer's thought or what is good or bad for any company that you have an opinion on. Not that my opinion is any more correct than yours. I mean, don't they say- "Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks"? Especially in the tech reader and commenter game.

This part of your article was just such an example:

"Netflix has been hemorrhaging subscribers who are displeased with the company’s new pricing plans. And its ill-fated decision to spin off its DVD rental business made management seem incompetent."

While Netflix has lost customers, I think you may be overreacting to how dire their situation is. Many subscribers have stayed on board and are very pleased with their service as can be read on forums. Know what else can be read on forums- especially after their new pricing structure was announced? A lot of tech savvy users (a minority) saying how Netflix is horrible and they can't wait to unsubscribe. This happens for so many subjects it's ridiculous. New phones not special enough- not included with enough unicorn blood, an app selling for $2.99 instead of $1.99- just a bunch of shit people want to complain about. And the polarizing effect of tech news and rumors upon us geeks can create somewhat of a tumultuous situation. But how many of these fanboys and tech savvy actually do what they threaten? Who knows, yet I can tell you that a couple weeks after the announcement, nobody even really gives a shit- they're on to some other story that they want to gripe and complain about.

As for you making it sounds like Netflix customers have lost their faith in the management of Netflix with their hiccup with Qwikster, again, I think you overreact. I don't think many Netflix customers give a shit about the "management" of Netflix as long as they get a good deal and are happy. Which I can say with some certainty, that plenty of users are. While I'm not receiving the same deal that I was prior to their pricing realignment, I still know I'm getting a pretty good deal and am happy. Back to management though, it was such a small fault, I doubt many customers even remember reading the email introducing Qwikster- or even read it at all. I do think the vocal tech industry needed something to gripe about and this gave them plenty of fuel for the fire- but another story came along to replace it- just like in politics.

As far as Verizon being stupid to try to enter the VOD space, that's hard to predict, but I can say that I've been on AT&T for 12 years (no problems here) but if I knew Verizon was including this for a small fee much like Netflix yet it was streamlined and maybe didn't count as part of my allotted data usage, it sure would make me pause and think about resigning with AT&T instead of Verizon. Do I think Verizon is that smart and has the technical know how to pull of a feat like this? Nope. If they do release something, I expect it to be overpriced, clunky, and to still eat your allowed data usage.

Can you really say that for sure? Personally the only reason I ended up on AT&T is because they bought out my local provider and that is the only one that covered my area. You can't count every iPhone user as a customer gained by it because they may have gotten some of them anyway. Also they had to pay Apple dearly for each and every one, which is why Verizon wouldn't play ball. So really there is no way to say for sure that AT&T gained more than they spent paying for iPhone exclusivity. It is possible. I am not saying that it couldn't have. I am just saying there is no way to say for sure that Verizon actually made a mistake. AT&T gained a large amount of their customers from buying out the little guys though. You can't give the iPhone all of that credit.

If they offered free streaming over their LTE network, I would easily pay $20 a month for it. What I mean is, if I stream from them, then it would not use up the data on my smartphone plan, making streaming mobile much more plausible for those of us who weren't grandfathered into unlimited data.

Iphone definitely saved AT&T. But verizon did fine without it. Partly due to their diverse portfolio of services. I'm going to have to disagree with the writer here. Remember when the TV/internet market was dominated by comcast and satellite. Verizon came in and swept the industry with better service and speeds.

Especially with redbox support (a universally known name) I could see them doing very well where verizon is unavailable. My apt building is Comcast only and I miss verizon. I would gladly trade in my comcast cable box to stream through my Logitech revue. With Verizons collateral they would most likely be able to stream the most recent shows (not last seasons). Current streaming sites are limited when dealing with media coorporations. With Verizon's current relationships I can't see how it wouldn't be a homering. It will be more expensive, for sure, but if service is like their TV, internet and mobile divisions, they'll do great.

The presence of the Iphone on ATT was pretty much the only thing that kept ATT alive during a several year period there. Sure everyone has the Iphone now, but ATT did have it locked up for a decent period there... and it saved them as far as I can tell.

"For years now, the carrier — along with its similarly lame competitors — has been making poor decisions. (Remember when it turned its back on Steve Jobs and iPhone?)"

Was it really a poor decision? AT&T paid out the a** for that thing and now everybody ended up getting it anyway.
