SUICIDE.

The Wii and DS sold very well because they were the cheapest gaming machines around the time. Its not the games. Believe me I know. Look at what happened to 3DS. High price less sales. Price cut more sales. Its really that simple once you guys get the fanboyism out of the way.Its really suicide for Nintendo to release the $300 Wii U at a time where PS3/360's can easily pull the trigger to slash the price point at $250 or $200 with gorgeous 4th generation games like By that time the roles will be reversed.

I don't know about anyone else, but I remember a company from a few years back that released sub-par hardware early trying to steal potential sales from a competitor.

Someone remind me: how many console sales did Sega have last year? Anyone?

My family owns a Wii, and none of us have touched the thing in probably two years. It's a gimmick with little appeal to those who play serious games. By saying 'serious', I disqualify the ridiculous Mario franchise and titles primarily written for the niche market of young children.
For the record, I have owned an XBOX360 since 2005 and play it weekly or more. Compare and contrast the graphics and titles for the Wii and the XBOX, as well as the quality of the ports from one to another, and I think you'll understand my reasoning.

Wow this whole article is rediculous. "live in No Man’s Land between those devices and more casual titles available in Apple’s App Store." what the hell are you talking about? That's the market Nintendo has always appealed to! That is not No Man's Land. That's who the Wii and all the DS's are targeted to. And they sold tens of millions. Nintendo has never tried to compete solely based on hardware performance or 99¢ app games, and they never will. This is the same kind of garbage we heard before the Wii's launch - "ditch it and make something real, Nintendo."

The creators of the playstation and xbox 360 are copy-cats. They made the Playstation move and Kinect which are overpriced knock offs of the Wii's motion sensing. What's not good about a new Wii that is $300/£190 when xbox and PS3 are at approx. $400. You need to realise that we are in a new generation where Sony and Microsoft do not rule the world of gaming. Simples ;)

Wow, there are ALOT of Nintendo fanboys on here. I must admit after sitting between the PS3/XBOX 360 arguments I forgot you guys existed lol. Look, I agree with the author, from a gamer's perspective Nintendo seems to be dooming themselves to a life of underpowered, gimmicky (YES I SAID IT) hardware and cartoony, childish games. I will give them credit for having some innovative ideas w/the Wii controller scheme but it's still limited to the casual gameplay. You arent going to sit in front of the TV for 6 hours at a time playing Red Steel ( i know you fanboys play it more than casually but the rest of the world doesnt), and unfortunately for Nintendo it has been overshadowed by the 360's Kinect.
From a business standpoint Nintendo has definitely outsold it's competitors in overall units but they become near obsolete so quickly that they HAVE to relsease their units before the competition. And again, the casual nature of the hardware and lackluster online community doesnt keep the more "hardcore" gamers playing on a frequent basis, using the online network, and adopting the technology-which is what will make the company more money in the long run. Selling you "online points" to purchase digital goods and licensing tech like MS is doing for the Kinect & Sony w/BluRay is what will bring in the extra cash that makes up for the money lost on building the console. Just like Amazon sells the Kindle Fire at a loss so they can keep you in their ecosystem and sell you lots of digital goods where they recoup their costs. And you can say "oh the 3DS is the number one selling portable game device of all time" but if Apple ever decides to release a hardware game controller for the iPhone you and i both know its GAME OVER for Nintendo in the mobile segment.

So I agree with Don. Nintendo is selling hardware that is new and semi "innovative"" at a profit NOW but they dont seem to see the bigger picture. Licensing, selling digital goods, and innovative hardware that will stick is where the future lies and with their your future income.

The thing is, I didn't buy any of the current gen consoles, where some people buy all 3 -- how much did that cost you?

Plus I use my computer for so many different things, its ridiculous. It does everything. Everything electronic that you can think of, a computer can do it better. A clock, a calculator, a TV, a movie player, game system, internet browser, telephone, radio, email, home office, printer, and so on. I use mine for all that and more -- like a musician recording studio, video game mod creation, stereo system, etc. A computer could even play Wii U, 360, and PS3 games and portable systems like the 3DS, if these companies wanted them to -- even in 3D. I mean, you can already play Wii games on a computer, so I see.

I basically just spend about $350 in total for the upper mainstream CPU, RAM, and motherboard every 5 or 10 years. You don't have to buy a new everything else. For example, in 2009 I bought the brand new i5-750 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a motherboard and put it in my old computer case.

This computer is still 1080p with all graphics settings maxed on ultra quality, at 90+ Frames per second, on games like DiRT 2. Similarly with Skyrim. I only have to dail back the shadow quality, because Bethesda used a poorly efficient method to implement shadows.

The myth that you need to spend thousands of dollars on a 'gaming' computer depends if you are Or are gaming on a laptop or starting from nothing. No computer case, no monitor, no keyboard, etc. And yet, these items are a commodity these days, especially if you buy used. I see that even brand new monitors can be found on sale for as low as $69, and keyboards and cases start at about $10 -- although I recommend getting the ones you like, not the cheapest ones.

PC games are much cheaper too.

To be more on topic, consoles are worthless for an adult, in my opinion. I love Nintendo for realizing that and making fantastic games I don't have to think twice about getting for children. I used to be that kid playing Zelda [1] and Mario [1] on a Nintendo Entertainment System.

The thing is, I didn’t buy any of the current gen consoles, where some people buy all 3 — how much did that cost you?

Plus I use my computer for so many different things, its ridiculous. It does everything. Everything electronic that you can think of, a computer can do it better. A clock, a calculator, a TV, a movie player, game system, internet browser, telephone, radio, email, home office, printer, and so on. I use mine for all that and more — like a musician recording studio, video game mod creation, stereo system, etc. A computer could even play Wii U, 360, and PS3 games and portable systems like the 3DS, if these companies wanted them to — even in 3D. I mean, you can already play Wii games on a computer, so I see.

I basically just spend about $350 in total for the upper mainstream CPU, RAM, and motherboard every 5 or 10 years. You don’t have to buy a new everything else. For example, in 2009 I bought the brand new i5-750 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a motherboard and put it in my old computer case.

Except that won't be a problem Kirby. As I said before, next gen will be about gimmicks. A casual system doesn't need to go all out or it won't be affordable enough for casuals. The reason gimmicks will be next gen is for two reasons:
1. we have reached a wall with technology. True 1080p is all next gen systems need to be capable of, meaning whatever power Wii U has it won't be significantly outclassed.
2. the casual market is worth big money, as Wii and Kinect have proven. Don't think making a new console will stop Microsoft from making it have casual appeal.

Gamers need to face the facts that gimmicky controls are taking over and the graphical wall we have hit will mean these gimmicks are what next gen is. And no I'm not suddenly jumping on the bandwagon and saying Kinect or move is cool because Microsoft and Sony are doing it. These are lame gimmicks which get boring after 5 minutes. The controller was all we needed.

The Wii U NEEDS to be quite a bit more powerful then the PS3, and can't rely on being unique alone to sell. The issue is, Sony and Microsoft have absolutely no incentive to release a new system UNTIL the Wii U is finalized, at which point they will just make theirs more powerful. Nintendo HAS to release the Wii U because the Wii is failing.
Software developers have leaked info that hints to an overhaul of the GPU and raw power of the console. It will most likely be much more powerful than the current gen, but only time will show. I hope the rumours are true, because I want Nintendo to succeed, and for them to do that, they need more horsepower and a console that won't be outdated on its release (on a side note, all consoles are when compared to PC, but you get my point).

Seriously?? Look at the Wii itself. It took about 5 years for PS and Microsoft to realize "hey! we should do a motion type of controller too!!" The PS Move is a copy of the Wiimote (albeit slightly more accurate) while i do appreciate that the kinect was much more innovative. I don't feel like nintendo has ever been about the cutting edge equipment, it's been about the innovation, and the games we have all come to love.

I disagree with this article. Before you say that Nintendo should push back the release date, consider the plight of the Nintendo 3DS. It was released a year before PlayStation Vita. At first, Nintendo saw a good amount of sales followed by lack of interest. There just weren't any good 3DS titles. Then, Nintendo lowered the price to $170, and then proceeded to launch games from their major franchises, which boosted interest in the 3DS.

In that timeframe, Vita wasn't released in Japan. When it *was* released to foreign markets, it was expensive (and still is). It sold around 1.2 million units by Feb. 26. Guess what, the 3DS has 15.03 million sold units. And it was released the year before.

Okay, that wasn't good. Let's look at the fifth generation of video games. PlayStation dominated. Why? Well, it was released earlier than its rivals. And I mean, a lot earlier. The Nintendo 64's release date got pushed to 1996, and its expensive 64MB ROM cartridges to manufacture and purchase got developers coming to PlayStation's 650MB optical discs that were cheaper to produce for. The Sega Saturn was released earlier, and was the most advanced console of its time. Oh yes, did I forget how difficult it was to develop for Saturn compared to PlayStation (the second processor was only utilized by first party developers)? Maybe its $400 price point will drive you away. And how did I forget the 4-month early surprise launch in the US that angered launch title developers and retailers?

In the same vein, the Wii U is said (not by Nintendo; we have little info on the specs but what we do know says that it will) to have better processing power compared to the last generation's most powerful consoles (read: PS3 and Xbox 360). It will also be released sometime this year (unless it gets the shaft on the release date), while Sony and Microsoft are focusing on their current consoles (unless they announce them at E3 this year, despite what they say). And don't forget the controller. Not only is there going to be a new controller, there will also be backwards compatibility with earlier peripherals. Already, developers are excited for the Wii U and are developing for it. And if Wii U gets released this year it will possibly lead the eighth generation of video games.

So in short, earlier release dates lead to success.

What I don't get is how you fail to mention the insane increase in third-party support that the Wii U is getting. Hardcore gamers don't game on Nintendo's systems mainly for that reason. Hell the Wii U is getting Darksiders II, Madden, Call of Duty (you know they will) and lots of other great titles that will be awesome on the tablet style controller. Don't get me wrong I love my Xbox and am kind of a Microsoft fanboy, but I am more so a GAMER. Which means I won't whine and bitch and instead I'll go buy all the console offerings that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have to offer. Because until they make a system that can play Halo, Zelda and God of War, I don't have much of a choice.

I'm buying. Fact is I can play most ps3/Xbox games on my pc with a Xbox USB controller. My video card is 4 years old and still pumps out graphics better than their future consoles. At least the wii u gives me something different. I'll be upgrading my card soon to a level the ps6 might not get to.
