'Deadpool' movie banned in China over violence, nudity

Deadpool fans in China won't be able to see the movie in theaters, as the nation's censors have banned the film due to graphic violence. The movie, which is rated "R," is a so-called anti-superhero flick that features potty-mouthed Deadpool, ample violence, and nudity. According to local news agencies and at least one inside source, China's officials in charge of censorship matters like this have banned Deadpool because the offensive elements were too pervasive to edit out.

The Hollywood Reporter says it has received confirmation about the ban from a source who is close to the matter. When foreign movies are released with content barred in China, Hollywood Studios often produce an edited version that eliminates the trouble stops, making them acceptable for screening in Chinese theaters.

In this case, however, removing the offending materials would disrupt the plot itself, rendering the movie unwatchable, and so editing is not an option. As such, China's State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, otherwise known as "SAPPRFT," has banned the film for all audiences.

This is unfortunate, as Marvel movies have a strong history of performing well in China. Movie producer 20th Century Fox has not commented on or confirmed the rumored ban. Deadpool hits theaters on February 12 in the US, and stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.
