DayZ console development: Xbox One more than likely, PS4 maybe

The zombie survival game known as DayZ is getting close and closer to the next-generation console environment this week, though with an intent much more well thought-out than the staggering mindlessness of the beasts it contains. This week in an interview with Gamereactor, game developer Dean "Rocket" Hall suggested that, while both consoles are still on the table, he's already had talks with Microsoft about the possibility of the title reaching the Xbox One first.

Adding that he "personally feels the new consoles have yet to prove themselves able to rival the PC experience," Hall suggested that the "potential" for both is still there. Hall suggested that he'd not yet had the opportunity to "view the full details of the PS4", but did suggest that he's been in direct talks with Microsoft about optimizing for and moving the game to Xbox One.

"I've not personally had the opportunity to view the full details of the PS4 whereas I have had the opportunity to talk extensively with Microsoft. The next-gen consoles show very exciting promise. I'm hopeful that they can deliver on that. Am important part of that, from my perspective, is encouraging and supporting third-party creative development to bring the "edginess" of PC creative development into the console.

I think if the role of Kinect/voice expands to where it is desired it could do some awesome things. I just think it's too early to say at this point." – Dean "Rocket" Hall

While the mod version of DayZ is still in development and undergoing changes of all kinds by the developer community, the full version of the game is under development by ARMA 2 creators Bohemia Interactive and Dean Hall himself. This game is out as an early test version with Steam and can be played by the public today.

This game was originally created as a modification of the game ARMA 2, and since it's gained enough popularity to have users purchase ARMA 2 just to play it, the developers behind ARMA 2 (again, Bohemia Interactive) have joined in on the fun and are developing the full final version with Hall. If this game is released for PS4 and/or Xbox One, we'll see a release at the tail end of this year at earliest – more than likely.
