Sky has announced plans to integrate on-demand programming into its set-top boxes, adding BBC iPlayer and ITV Player to UK Sky Anytime+ in what appears to be a challenge to smart TV strategies from Google, Apple and others. The deal with the BBC and ITV means recently screened content will join archival shows already offered through Sky Anytime+, provided at no extra charge to existing satellite subscribers.

In the past the technology world has seen companies get together and agree to set pricing and other details on products, even though that's illegal. The LCD industry is a prime example with an agreement for price-fixing and the massive fines they paid out the cause of it.

Windows 8 on ARM stable release in February tip developers
Microsoft's stable Windows 8 on ARM release will be distributed among developers in February, sources claim, while previous suggestions the platform won't arrive until mid-2013 could well be untrue. There's no obvious reason that ARM-version of Windows 8 - expected to run on iPad-rivaling tablets as well as ultraportable notebooks - should be "staggered" from the traditional x86 build, an insider told CNET, with the claim that ARM alternatives to Intel and AMD based Windows 8 machines could undercut them by "hundreds of dollars less."

Facebook Timeline and Apps turn users off with over-sharing
Facebook Timeline and the Open Graphs “apps” are proving more turn-off than value-add to users, according to research by security firm Sophos and SlashGear, with many considering deleting their Facebook account after the recent profile changes. Over 51-percent of Facebook users told Sophos they were “worried” by Timeline, which lists all your activity on the site in chronological order; meanwhile, 45-percent of respondents to a separate SlashGear poll said they might abandon the social network in protest.

Samsung has revealed a new midrange Android smartphone, the Galaxy S Advance, packing a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and dual-core 1GHz processor and intended to push the company's Hub services. Similar to - though smaller than - the bestselling Galaxy S II, the Galaxy S Advance has a 5-megapixel camera, WVGA display and 768MB of RAM, slotting Samsung's ChatON IM app along with music, ebook and gaming download Hubs into Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Google’s recycled paper mill datacenter uses seawater for green cooling
We all know that Google is big on green. The company has huge investments in solar power, wind power, and more green sources of renewable energy. This green push isn't something new at Google; it's been going on for years. Way back in 2009 Google bought an abandoned paper mill located in Hamina, Finland at a price right at $52 million. Placing a high-tech datacenter for a company as big as Google inside a 56-year-old abandoned paper mill seems very strange at first glance.

NEC to chop 10,000 workers from payroll
The axe is set to fall over at NEC Corp in Japan with just about one in 10 of its workers to be cut. NEC has announced that is set to lay off 10,000 workers as it attempts to claw its way out of the red and back into the black. One reason cited for the job losses is stiff competition posed from rivals from foreign countries such as Apple. NEC blames the poor performance and the job cuts on soft demand for its mobile phones.

Spotify less useful than radio says U2 manager
Secretive licensing deals and "insufficient transparency" could scupper Spotify and other cloud-jukebox services, U2 manager Paul McGuinness has warned, suggesting that "we're unlikely to give [debut records] to Spotify" as the streaming music platform is more promotional than a money-spinner. McGuinness sees "the Spotify model" as part of the future of music, Digital Music News reports, but the supergroup manager also criticized confidentiality agreements between the service and labels as failing to show exactly what the benefits to musicians might be.

DMARC: Facebook, Google, Microsoft & more team on anti-phishing
Google, Microsoft, PayPal, Facebook and other big names have announced a new anti-spam and phishing project, DMARC.org, creating a new system for email authentication that promises to learn from past attacks. "Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance" will use "a feedback loop between legitimate email senders and receivers to make impersonation more difficult" and, the companies hope, will eventually be adopted by the IETF as a standard.
