AMD rebrand revealed: ATI ditched as consumers wise-up

AMD has confirmed it intends to axe its separate ATI graphics card branding, telling The Tech Report that it will instead be bringing them under the AMD umbrella.  Intended to accommodate the new breed of combined CPU/GPU Fusion chipsets that will kick off with the Bobcat before the end of 2010, the move also follows AMD's research which discovered potential buyers were three times more likely to pick an ATI-branded card when they were told AMD were behind it. Sony SRS-V500IP travel mug speaker system arrives in US

You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a combination cup-holder and iPod dock, but in actual fact the Sony SRS-V500IP gives speakers a travel-mug style update.  Inside lurks the company's 360-degree "Circle Sound Stage" system, promising to spread the audio from the 16W stereo speakers so that everyone around you can enjoy it, while the "mug" itself can be removed and used with an in-car power adapter, slotting neatly into a cupholder. KT Identity Tab Android WiBro tablet outed; Samsung does a double-take

Korean carrier KT has outed their own 7-inch tablet, the KT Identity Tab, packing a 1GHz processor, 8GB of internal storage, DMB TV tuner and HDMI connectivity.  Bundled with WiBro data service, the Identity Tab also has WiFi and Bluetooth, together with a 3-megapixel camera on the back. Toshiba AC100 Tegra 2 benchmarks tip the performance we’ve been waiting for

With the Toshiba AC100 out in the wild, it's now possible to see just how well NVIDIA's second-gen Tegra chipset performs in comparison to other Android hardware.  According to Carrypad's testing, the answer is "pretty darn impressive"; they've run Quadrant on the AC100 (an Android app that measures various aspects of processor, memory, I/O and 2D/3D graphics and combines them into a single score) and the netbook managed 1,911.  In contrast, a Google Nexus One running Android 2.2 scored 1,390. Cisco bid for Skype tipped after Google bow out?

Skype may be swapping hands again, with rumors coming from one of TechCrunch's more trusted sources that Cisco has made an offer to acquire the well-known VoIP service.  According to insiders, Skype are hoping for a $5bn valuation from their ongoing IPO process; there's no word on how much Cisco may have offered, but presuming this is a serious move by the company it could be a significant step up from the $2.5bn eBay paid for Skype back in 2005. Nokia E7 and C6-01 outed in XML profiles

XML profiles of two rumored Nokia handsets have been spotted online, for the Nokia E7 - tipped to be the N8-style QWERTY phone leaked a few months back - and the Nokia C6-01.  Both run Symbian^3 with a 640 x 360 display, WiFi and Bluetooth, with the C6-01 expected to have an 8-megapixel camera. $5 pay-per-view YouTube movies tipped as Google sweet-talks studios

YouTube's fledgling catalog of on-demand movies could be the first step in a new, pay-per-view streaming scheme by parent company Google, if the Financial Times' sources are to be believed.  Tipped to launch by the end of 2010, the new service would take advantage of YouTube's well-known brand name; according to the insiders, Google has been wowing studio executives with their potential viewing figures, and is angling for a $5-per-movie rental rate. Intel buys Infineon’s Wireless division in $1.4bn deal: WiMAX and LTE the focus

Intel has announced a $1.4bn cash deal to buy Infineon's Wireless Solutions (WLS) business, maintaining the 3G, WiFi, WiMAX and LTE company as a separate venture but also dipping liberally into their expertise for upcoming Intel products and strategy.  This relatively hands-off approach to running Infineon is likely to placate the company's existing customers - which includes Apple, who source their WiFi+3G chipset for the iPad from the firm - while will also see them continuing to supply ARM-based chipsets together with Intel silicon. Samsung Wave 723 tries bada on mainstream hardware

We can't say we were overwhelmingly convinced with Samsung's bada smartphone OS back when we reviewed the Wave S8500, the handset's high-end specs doing most of the wowing, so we'll be interested to see how a more affordable model fares.  Samsung has just outed the Wave 723 (GT-S7320E), apparently intended to further "democritize" the smartphone market, with a 3.2-inch WQVGA LCD display, 5-megapixel camera and dualband UMTS/HSPA. Welcome to the latest edition of the SlashGear Week in Review! One of the big topics this week has been the details surfacing about the Apple iTV device that will replace the Apple TV epic fail. Kevin Rose claims that the device will have iAd-supported content and an iPad remote control. Rumors made the rounds early in the week that Apple and Verizon were still working out the details on the iPhone coming to the Verizon network. It's starting to feel like everybody has a Samsung Galaxy Tab but us, though hopefully that will change shortly after IFA 2010 next week.  The 7-inch slate has now shown up in Israel, complete with a CDMA radio, supposedly in the hands of a security app developer there.  Meanwhile, details on the Samsung Galaxy Tab's accessories have been spotted, including a QWERTY keyboard dock and Table Charging Station complete with HDMI connectivity. What Mafia II says about the Gaming Industry

For the past week, I’ve been playing Mafia II. Like most people, I like the idea of playing a title that offers a rich story, gives me opportunities to do more than one thing, and lets me enjoy a GTA-like experience.

But as I play the game, I continue to have an unnerving thought: it represents everything that the gaming industry has become. And by doing so, it properly illustrates the issues that old-school gamers like myself find with the gaming business.

See, Mafia II is a fine game. It’s fun, it’s entertaining, and for the most part, I think the average gamer would like it. But it’s mediocre in every way.
