Anybots QB telepresence robot on sale now for $15k

Anybots QB telepresence robot on sale now for $15k

It looks, we have to admit, a whole lot like a frisbee stuck on top of a Segway, but it's actually Anybots' latest telepresence robot, the Anybots QB, and it's on sale today.  The company is taking preorders for the first 100 'bots, each priced at $15,000, with first deliveries expected in fall 2010.  Your money gets you a self-balancing robot - signed and numbered by the Anybots team, no less - together with invites to a launch party and early access to other goodies as part of the company's "100 Club".

If you're more interested in the tech, meanwhile, than the perks, then you'll probably want to know that the Anybots QB has a 5-megapixel camera paired with an LCD display, and can trundle at up to 3.5mph around your office allowing staff working remotely to virtually attend and interact with those on-site.  Connecting via WiFi b/g and a straightforward online UI, the Anybots QB has a battery good for up to eight hours use (which just so happens to be a working day).

DIY wearable computer uses Beagleboard & wireless keyboard

DIY wearable computer uses Beagleboard & wireless keyboard

Perhaps it makes us unbearably geeky, but we do have more than a soft spot for wearable computers.  Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for what little sartorial dignity we have left these days) manufacturers are proving more reluctant to put out suitable products, and that leaves the niche clear for DIYers.  Martin Magnusson pointed us in the direction of his own project, taking a Myvu Crystal eyepiece and hooking it up to a Beagleboard fanless computer and four AA batteries.

Safari 5.0.1 released: new Extensions add feature flexibility

Safari 5.0.1 released: new Extensions add feature flexibility

After the iMac and Mac Pro hardware updates yesterday, Apple has turned its attentions to software today with a new version of their Safari browser.  Safari 5.0.1 has activated Safari Extensions, basically HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript coded add-ons and plug-ins, which can be installed from the Safari Extensions Gallery.

Safari 5 made its debut in June, boasting a 30-percent speed boost over v.4 of the browser and twice the speed of Firefox 3.6.  Users also get a new Reader mode, which basically strips out all the extraneous ads, images and content from a webpage, leaving only the text behind in an easy-to-consume format.
