Toshiba Portege R705 Review

Toshiba’s Portege R705 is an unexpected addition to the company’s ultraportable range. Based on the Portege R700 unveiled as part of Toshiba’s 25th anniversary for notebooks, the R705-P25 is a Best Buy exclusive with an MRSP of $889.99 but a street price that scrapes in at under $800. That makes it the cheapest Portege to date, and Toshiba would like us to remember it’s also the lightest 13.3-inch notebook with an integrated optical drive (outside of Japan, at least). iMac stock shortages continue ahead of tipped range refresh

Speculation of an imminent iMac refresh continues apace, with AppleInsider hearing that some Apple stores are reporting low or non-existent stock of both 21.5- and 27-inch versions of the all-in-one desktop.  The news follows recent leaks that tipped updated iMacs with USB 3.0, faster FireWire connectivity and even touchscreen functionality; a new entry-level machine with an Intel Core i3 CPU has been mentioned, together with dual-core Core i5 and quad-core Core i5/i7 models. Mac mini gets the Colorware treatment

Colorware has been splashing its paint about again, and come up with this: a custom version of Apple's Mac mini.  All the usual hues are available, with solid, metallic and pearl palettes together with regular or soft-touch finishes, and you can choose different colors for the aluminum chassis and the Apple logo. Sprint Palm Pixi gets WiFi transplant from Pre Plus [Video]

The absence of WiFi from Sprint's Palm Pixi was all the more galling when Verizon's version, the Pixi Plus, went on sale with its extra shot of wireless.  One owner, PreCentral forum member gitit20, decided that the original Pixi was ripe for a shot of DIY modding, and so he's transplanted the wireless card from a Verizon Palm Pre Plus into his Pixi and got the whole thing running. iPhone 4 spreads this Friday: 17 more countries on July 30th

Apple would hate for you to forget their roll-out plans for the iPhone 4, and so they're just sent out a quick reminder that as of this coming Friday, July 30th, the fourth-generation smartphone will go on sale in seventeen more countries.  Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland will join the existing five countries where the iPhone 4 is on sale (France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US), though of course it will only be available in black for the time being. Olympus PEN E-PL1 gets augmented reality demo [Video]

You might remember the augmented reality business cards we wrote about all the way back in July 2009; well, Olympus has taken the same idea and turned it into a pretty neat interactive demo for their PEN E-PL1 micro-four-thirds camera.  Using a paper cut-out of the E-PL1 and your computer's webcam, the demo can show a life-sized 3D representation of the camera with clickable features, working still and video capture, and instant upload of content you create to Facebook and YouTube. LG Display can’t meet Apple demand yet may cut production
