UMID M1 mbook reviewed: great mobile comms device

, Mar 25th 2009 Discuss [1]

Despite all our hands-on time with the UMID M1 mbook, we've never had long enough to decide finally whether it's a triumph of miniaturization or a scale-down step too far.  MID Moves took the 4.8-inch mobile internet device to SXSW, comparing it to a number of other MIDs and UMPCs along the way, and despite some qualms about build quality and just how much long-term use you could make of the keyboard they're impressed. Intel multi-gigabit wireless promises smaller, cheaper, faster

, Mar 25th 2009 Discuss [0]

Intel researchers have developed a new digital conversion technique that, according to the company, will allow for cheaper and smaller radios capable of dealing with multi-Gbps data rates.  In addition to increased accuracy over existing high-end DAC components, the new system makes no greater power demands. The impact, Intel suggest, could be a new generation of smaller and more energy efficient mobile devices.  These would be capable of gigabit wireless connections, used for wireless syncing, wireless display and high-speed wireless networking. Sony gets greener DVD packaging

, Mar 24th 2009 Discuss [0]

Sony has decided to take a step toward becoming more environmentally-friendly. They've just announced that their DVD and Blu-ray packaging will start to slim down and make a goal of using less resources to contain their products. Most movies come in larger plastic cases with cardboard sleeves over them these days. But this is just plain wasteful. Starting immediately, Sony will use 80% of the plastic that is currently used. That's a significant cut back. Plus, the box art will be made from recycled paper. The plastic wrap will not be as thick and the cardboard sleeve will be nixed altogether. With less packaging materials, it will also cut fuel and resources used to ship the products to stores, saving the company money. The first Sony movie to have the honor of being green is "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" as you could no doubt tell from the picture to the right. [via Gadgetell]

IOGEAR releases printer switch for PC and Mac

, Mar 24th 2009 Discuss [0]

Sometimes, it's the small things in life that make me happy. And simple gadgets like the one released by IOGEAR today do exactly that. The Printer Auto Sharing Switch has two ports and it works with both Macs and PCs. I know it's not much to look at, but this is no doubt convenient. IOGEAR is claiming this switch is the first of its kind to completely recognize both PCs and Macs. You can use two computers that run on either platform with this switch. All you have to do is plug the computers into the switch and the switch into the printer. That's all there is to it. It works with any USB printer and can detect which computer is requesting a print job automatically. That's pretty convenient, if you ask me. The switch is powered by the USB bus and requires Windows 2000 and up or Mac OS X Panther and up. You can get your hands on the IOGEAR Printer Auto Sharing Switch today for $40.
