Cellphone WAP-controlled DIY home automation project

Intel 160GB X25-M SSD begins shipping

Intel have begun shipping the 160GB version of their X25-M solid-state drive.  The new SSD doubles the capacity of the previous model, the 80GB, and is initially only available in the 2.5-inch form-factor; a 1.8-inch 160GB X18-M SSD will begin shipping in January 2009.  No official pricing has been announced for either drive; however the 80GB X25-M currently retails for around $540. CDs are dead, focus on digital downloads for profit, advises Gartner

Gartner have called for music labels to focus on online distribution of music, together with on-demand delivery, and accept that CDs are a dying technology.  The information technology research and advisory firm described CDs as reaching a revenue peak at the turn of the century, but experiencing an inevitable decline now that broadband speeds and had become fast enough, and PMPs attractive enough, to make electronic distribution feasible. Psystar accuse Apple of OS X copyright failure

In the ongoing litigation between Psystar and Apple, the Mac clone manufacturer have claimed Apple failed to file for copyright protection of OS X, and as such are "prohibited from bringing action".  The argument was submitted last week, as part of Psystar's defence against Apple's charge of copyright infringement; it follows Psystar's counterclaim suit against the company being thrown out of court last month. Garmin dispute sales predictions, pointedly ignore Android device rumors

Garmin have responded to the same Digitimes report yesterday that suggested the company was planning a new range of Android-based devices in the second half of 2009.  The primary point of disagreement is in Digitimes' "sales figures and product rollout schedules"; quoting Garmin's Asia Pacific marketing director Tony An, the publication claimed that 2008 total sales would amount to 18 million units.  Now Garmin appear to be distancing themselves from those predictions, perhaps paving the way for lower performance figures.   Read The Full Story

Nuforce Icon Mobile headphone amp & USB DAC

Nuforce's Icon Mobile is a headphone amp with a difference.  Like most of its ilk, it starts with offering headphone amplification - in this case twin 80mW at 16-Ohm, with a signal to noise ratio of 0.054-percent at 25 mW, 1 kHz - for your PMP, though here to the Icon Mobile offers dual outputs rather than the traditional one.  However it then includes USB DAC functionality, connecting to your laptop via USB and bypassing its audio outputs. Viliv S5 MID coming early 2009: 1080p HD, touchscreen, optional 3G

A MID that promises in excess of six hours battery life is always going to get attention, and that's just what the Viliv S5 did back at IDF in August.  The 4.8-inch touchscreen device was slated to launch this quarter; courtesy of an interview with Yukyung, the company behind the S5, we now know it's coming in January or February next year.  So, it's late, but is it worth waiting for?  If you want a fanless ultraportable with hardware 1080p HD video acceleration, a Flash 10-based interface and optional GPS and DMB, then the answer is yes. Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds prototype caught on video

While I know Lenovo's ThinkPad W700ds dual-screen workstation would likely break my weak blogger's back should I actually try to lift it, that still doesn't end its appeal.  A video of one of Lenovo's prototypes has shown up, showing the mechanism by which the second, 10.6-inch LCD display slides out and then back into the W700ds' lid, behind the primary 17-inch display.
