Do-it-all Bedside Radio leaves no space for your false teeth

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [0]

Sweet Martha Stewart, who on the highly-polished Earth needs this on their bedside table?!  Yes, it looks like a Tascam multi-track recorder, but don't be deceived - it's actually a clock-radio.  Or is is a weather station?  Or is it a police scanner?  Calm down, dearests, it's actually all of the above.  Yes, for $199.95 Hammacher Schlemmer will sell you a behemoth of a wake-up call. Synchronising to the atomic clock at the National Institute of Standards and Time, capable of monitoring FM/AM bands as well as traffic, weather, police, public safety, aircraft and VHF TV, with 30 pre-sets and that all-important snooze.  Because let's face it, it doesn't matter how many channels you have, in the morning you just want five minutes more. Banish cold cups

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [0]

Y'know, my skills as a poet are woefully under-utilised here on SlashGear.  Yes, I get shiny things to review and an opportunity to bleat about the latest news, but where are the haiku's?  Sometimes it's nice to sit down on a large and squashy bean-bag, drink about thirteen cups of coffee and write poems about the latest Blackberry or what Steve Jobs is up to.  At times like those, however, I'm constantly upset by the coldness of my coffee cup against my lips - a sensation like that can really interfere with your rhyming couplets, you know - and so I'm relieved to the point of elation that Jura has fashioned this glass'n'steel standalone cup warmer. With room for up to 16 standard coffee cups or 24 of your favourite espresso cups, it uses a convection heater that quickly reaches operating temperature and holds it stable.  Jura are charging $1,000 for this beauty, which is a lot, but if you serve a lot of coffee then it might be worth it. Personally I'm off to write a grubby limerick about Google. Jura [via Appliancist]

Hulger get crafty – make wooden bluetooth handset

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [0]

It's tough standing out with your cellphone these days; handsets that were launched with promising exclusivity (yes, I'm looking at you, RAZR) were soon commercialised and found their way into the hands of just about anyone capable of scrawling an X onto a contract.  What costs several hundred dollars today is a freebie in a few weeks time, as manufacturers fall over themselves to ship out the latest "World's Thinnest!"  No, when you can't rely on your mobile to keep you hip, you need to look to peripherals to stand out from the crowd. Hulger have been making add-on retro-style handsets for cellphones for some time now, with a range of shapes and connectivity options.  Their latest is a wooden version of their PIP*PHONE design, crafted from grain-rich Ziricote (hence the name: Ziricote*PHONE) and coming complete with a pot of wax (helpfully labelled should you mistake it for a tiny amount of cold soup) to feed and maintain it.  Traditional looks don't mean traditional features, though; the Ziricote* connects via Bluetooth, and can be used with cellphones or VOIP software. It's priced at £2,000 ($3,850), coming in a matching wooden box, and Hulger will be selling it via their website. Hulger [via NOTCOT]

The Zune hacks keep coming: XP Pro 64-bit version

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [2]

Perhaps Microsoft were saving money by releasing the Zune with support only for limited versions of their OS - they knew that enterprising software ferrets would dig out the best way to enable functionality of the DAP's music store and sync software for Vista and others by themselves.  Whatever their motivation, the mere fact that it's another day means we get another hack to run Zune no matter your PC's flavour.  Today it's the turn of Windows XP 64-bit edition. With a few tweaks to a copy of the Zune software already installed on a 32-bit machine, as well as some registry work, full functionality is enabled.  I wonder who'll be first to get Zune running on a Mac? Treo 680 gets competition: i-mate JAQ3

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [3]

Everywhere you turn these days there seems to be a smartphone waiting to ambush you, leaping out from the shadows and shaking its QWERTY keyboard, cajoling you with promises of push-email and good times.  Choice is a Good Thing, of course, but the downside is that it can get confusing trying to decide which is worth giving up a year or maybe two of your contract-life for.  As far as I can tell, this new i-mate JAQ3 is aimed at potential Treo 680 buyers; like the Palm phone, it lacks 3G connectivity, but unlike it offers Windows Mobile. UK gamers can’t cope with Rule of Rose

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [0]

Up until ten minutes ago I'd never heard of PS2 game Rule of Rose, a macabre journey through a 1930s orphanage complete with sadistic child torture and creepy "you belong to us now" storyline.  However now having found out that, slated for release in the UK today, it now in fact won't be sold here at all due to highly vocal opposition from significant figures in European politics, I'm determined to get my hands on it. Ironically, although it succeeds in being atmospheric and vaguely creative, reviews of Rule of Rose such as this one by NTSC-uk have been lukewarm.  Controversy, however, is an excellent sales tool (look at Bully if you don't believe me) and I'm in no doubt that there'll be a whole lot of clandestine copies of the game winging their way across the Atlantic before long. More Wii internet tomfoolery – Opera 9.0 pre-installed

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [0]

Thanks to some lateral thinking on the part of a Wii owner comes the news that much-admired web browser Opera 9.0 is preloaded on Nintendo's latest console.  Apparently the WiiLi.org forum member set up a local DNS server that redirected oss.shop.wii.com to his own webserver, whereupon a simple javascript function displayed the browser's User Agent string. There's also a video (after the cut) showing how another creative Wii owner circumnavigated the previous hassle of redirecting the console's shopping page to google, by instead getting his wireless router to intercept and forward on any request for the shop to the search engine. Network your laundry

, Nov 25th 2006 Discuss [0]

If this video of the Internet Home Alliance Research Council's LaundryTime project is anything to go by, I predict an increase in highway accidents caused by people being contacted on their cellphones by their washing machines.  But inciting domestic-themed pile-ups is not the main motivation of linking your washer and dryer up to your home network; no, it's to streamline the laundry process and stop it taking over your life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4ywqKfimiE More information can be found on the Continental Automated Buildings Association webpage. Compact GPS Data Logger integrates with Google Earth

, Nov 24th 2006 Discuss [0]

Have you ever wondered where your partner goes during the day?  They claim to be at the office, but when they get home they smell strongly of dung and are chewing on a piece of straw.  You suspect they might be a closet farmer, tending to the fields and just pretending to be a chartered accountant, but without proof you can't trick them into appearing on a daytime television show and confront them.  Well now, you paranoid menace, you can track them using the awesome power of satellites. Looking, to all rights and intents, like a simple USB memory key, the GPS Track Stick is in fact a tiny data logger which stores its location over time, later to be uploaded to a computer via the USB 1.1 plug.  The included integration software can then display the data in standard HTML, EXCEL, Google Earth KML, and RTF file formats.  Date, Time, Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, Speed, If the unit stopped and for what time frame, Direction of travel (N, W, E, S), GPS Fix and Signal Strength are all recorded, and the device is accurate to 15 metres. The best thing is, because they're not actually in an office they'll never plug the key in and thus discover your subtefuge!  Don't delay, buy the $259 GPS Track Stick for your loved one this Christmas.  (Of course, it's illegal to track someone without their permission; instead you should use the Track Stick for entertaining hobby-style purposes) Product Page [via bookofjoe]

AirScooter takes to the skies

, Nov 24th 2006 Discuss [0]

Remember that Micro Mosquito RC helicopter from September?  It used a coaxial rotor system of two contra-rotating blades to make flying it as easy as kidnapping a sedated seal on rollerskates.  How many of you thought "I wish they'd make one full size, so I can ride around in it"?  Obviously enough for the magic helicopter fairy to hear you and make your wish come true!   Controlled by a simple set of motorcycle-style handlebars with a throttle grip to control the 65HP engine and in turn vary altitude, the Air Scooter requires far less training than traditional helicopters demand.  The absence of pedal controls means that people without the use of their legs (or, like me, who have rubbish independent hand/leg management) can fly too.  The 5 gallon fuel tank permits two hours of flight, while the flotation pontoons mean you can land on water should you misgauge your flight-plan!  Make sure you check out the video of the Air Scooter in action, after the cut. Zune hacked again: Mass Storage via WiFi

, Nov 24th 2006 Discuss [2]

One of the reasons I often see people giving in their feeble justifications for treating themselves to a new iPod (come on, admit it, you're just in lust) is that they can use it as an external hard-drive to transfer files.  Up until now Microsoft has prevented potential Zune owners from using that same excuse, as their DAP doesn't show up as a drag-and-drop drive.  Thankfully, where a manufacturer bows out, the hackers step in - hence we have this step by step guide to setting up your PC to use the Zune as an external drive that connects either by USB or WiFi. To do so you have to tweak some of the settings in your computer's registry, and as they're careful to point out modifying it incorrectly can lead to your PC playing the old doorstop game.  You should definitely back at least the registry up (and preferably the whole PC) before you try.  Unfortunately, for anyone wondering if they'll be able to bypass the DRM on music files using this method, the answer is no.  Still, it could be a useful addition to the Zune's repertoire.
