Last month we reported that D-Wave had unveiled the first quantum computer. There has since been much speculation as to the validity of that claim. Those claims are now being backed by NASA.
NASA reports that it was contracted by D-Wave to build the the chip that went into the machine used in the demonstration. It is understandable that the general public was skeptical of the technology, as the actual machine used in the demonstration was not on-site during the demonstration.
The technology is still far from ready to be released into the wild, but they are expected to start renting time on the machine to customers sometime in 2008.
