about time google learns that just because it’s got billions in cash lying around and a huge “I’m gonna do it my way cause I’m Google and I can make you invisible on the web if I want” chip on its shoulder that it can’t just swoop in and copy everyone else’s inventions without paying royalties and with no repercussions

Microsoft’s Windows Phone is easily the best smartphone platform I have ever used. It’s UI makes it 10x better than anything out on the market to date.

While Amazon may sell some millions, Amazon will not be able to keep up with innovation in this space.

Amazon is no Apple which designs hardware and software. Amazon is no Google which releases a new next generation feature every day.

With Apple, Amazon could look “cheap”. With Google, Amazon could look “obsolete” the next day of release.

I can understand why Microsoft did this, for money obviously. Theirs methods are no so honorable but still, they manage to get money.

The thing is, people don’t buy windows phones and very few like it and no amount of suing will change that. People are on google and apple side (75% market share together) because they love their products. It’s not a good sign when you gotta sue company to force them into adopting your products.

I can see myself paying for NOT having Microsoft around in my smartphone.

My support goes for android and google on this, they just need to find a way to get through this.

There is other posibility – the amount Microsoft wants is VERY small – like $0,5 per device. It’s secret though, so others won’t know the real sum.

The more corporations that sign on, the more legitimate that this is. I mean, especially if you look at Samsung. They’re fighting Apple tooth and fucking nail over patent litigation. Yet they just signed off this licensing agreement with Microsoft – no mess or fuss.

Clearly they see something there. And clearly they believe it’s easier to sign the licensing deal then fight a losing patent war with Microsoft.

People seem to forget just how many mobile software Patents Microsoft owns. They’re also one of the few companies who could bitchslap Apple back and forth in the mobile sector if they wanted to – in regards to pretty much anything they want. Microsoft even holds KEY multi-touch patents that Apple (despite claiming to have invented multi-touch) can’t even approach.

The only company I can think of that would hold as many (as well very critical) software patents as Microsoft would be Palm…and they no longer exist.

It makes no sense for a phone maker to pay a company royalties for each time they use a competitor’s OS. If anyone should be getting the royalties on it, it should be Google. They’ve essentially taken a free OS and created a $5 charge for using it, even though they have no intellectual property rights within it.

All that Google wants is control of software so that they can innovate. They will continue to do so and win consumers.

Microsoft is a loser here, because this helps Android, Android will continue to gain market share beyond current 53%, Microsoft will become a patent troll, cease to be a software shop at some point.
