I agree with Global Climate Change as opposed to Global Warming. There are very large swings in the weather. It's a different statement of the same idea. Deceit is of course our own undoing. When the few work in the best interest of even fewer who control the greater assets to general detriment, the populace will suffer. Then, we will probably throw off such oppression. I read about a duty or right to do that somewhere...

I think we are collectively getting dumber, as a species, thanks, in part, to deceptive propaganda, and maybe the Universe will test our abilities by throwing a massive projectile at our home, Earth.
If we can not get our global act together to save the planet from an asteroid or comet(s), how will we ever get a handle on Climate Change, world hunger and poverty, and abuse of the poor by the wealthy. Maybe lying should be illegal in every corner of human discourse. Deceit will be our eventual undoing. Deceit by the powerful on all of the rest of us, that is. Never trust all of your news to one source. Get the facts by trolling a lot of sources. Takes time, but who wants to be deceived? Global Warming is very real and is not up for a public opinion vote. It is a fact, just like the possible dangers of space rocks. Honest.

Don't forget most people were only thinking of one natural event that year.... Krakatoa began erupting in May of that year and killed over 40,000 people immediately, the dust that covered the planet dropped global temperatures and probably made it very hard to see anything in the sky. The story does not state what month the observations were made, but likely before the eruption. Also be reminded that science in 1883 is not at all what we are used to today. Final comment: if we were a smarter species, we would probably put some effort into planetary defense against these rocks and ice chucks. We KNOW they have done in life on earth before, not once, but many times. WTF, now we have telescopes, rockets, warheads, and the ability to calculation how to protect ourselves, but pity the few scientists and policy wonks who tries to get funding for this (especially in the recession).

This doesn't pass the common sense test. If a large comet like Pons-Brooks had simply disappeared from view, astronomers all over the world at the time would have been searching for its remains. Any professional or amateur astronomer at the time would have been eager to take credit for discovering its fate and would publish quickly. And besides that, any sizable comet that broke up that thoroughly so close to Earth would be expected to shower us with at least some fragments, if not on that pass then on subsequent passes, causing notable meteor showers that no one could ignore. This just doesn't add up as credible in part or in whole.
