TI think you left out the part about them shutting down pedophilia groups. Yeah, what a bunch of jerks.

The rest of their targets like Fox News(regularly harasses others) and Sony (sued some guy for a playstation hack) had poor security anway. The companies that were attacked frequently had done some morally questionable thing and lulzsec dealt out “punishment”.

They may have ruined the working lives of some people, but those people one way or another earned it. To not bring that up while discussing the moral issues of their deeds is disingenuous at best, and propaganda-like at worst.

I didn’t even think it was possible to discuss the greys of vigialntism in black and white context. Is this an elaborate troll?

They are criminals to everyone even you. You may believe they are justified criminals (Robin hood) but even you must admit that shutting down web bussinesses, stealing private information, and defacing others property (real or virtual) are crimes. The world is a little worse for the effect of having hackers take from it and these people are no heros for theft and intimidation. Even someone who wants to read every piece of information no matter how private has to know that stealing someone else’s information is theft.

JohnJohnJ – Calm down. They may not be _your_ compatriots, but they unequivocally are such to each other. The author is making a point about the collective nature of their apprehensions, and it begs a non-collective noun with collective nuances. Sure, one could write, “If these criminals were caught…”, but that is pejorative, unrefined, and based on presumption of guilt. The two former are examples of poor writing, the latter is inconsistent with a civilized system of justice. “Ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat.”, as they used to say.

“Compatriots” is an excellent word to describe those who band together, placing a higher value on being citizens of cyberspace than on being citizens of any analog nation.
