So the question on every Xbox 360 owner since the demise of the HD DVD format has been whether Microsoft will bite the bullet and release a Blu-ray add-on for the console. Rumors have been running abound that Microsoft is in talks with Sony to do just that. However, the official word from Microsoft is that they are not.

According to a recent interview with Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360 “Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.”
I can’t say that I’m entirely surprised at this outcome. I don’t think that Microsoft would have all that much to gain from releasing a Blu-ray add-on (especially since they’d have to go through the competition to do it). At this point they are focusing on the fact that it still plays the most popular movie format (DVD) and digital downloads.

“Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.”
That’s true and expected. It’s not going to be INTEGRATED. But I’ll almost guarantee that there’ll be an add-on just like the HD DVD add-on. The XBOX games themselves will be just like they are now- neither HD DVD nor BR.
Stop confusing people with your misleading headlines.
I stand by both my title and my post. It’s all about how he worded it. If he hadn’t used the words “Xbox experience” I would have been inclined to agree with you. However, Microsoft uses that term to describe all aspects that affect the enjoyment of the 360 (or original Xbox) which include media services and add-ons.
Thus the HD DVD player add-on would have been considered a part of the “Xbox experience,” and so would a Blu-ray add-on.
Well that just sucks. I was still holding out some small shred of hope that I could get away with not buying a PS3, but I guess this seals the deal. Soon as I can afford it I’m going to have to go buy a PS3 (and start collecting BluRay movies).
I love both companies and consoles and I think microsoft shouldnt add a blu-ray add-on. They should just focus on hd movie downloads from xbox live staright to your console. If they did have a blu-ray add-on it would give people more the reason to consider the playstation 3 (I know I did I bought the ps3 for the blu-ray and returned my ring of death xbox.) Xbox should also come out with the new xbox 720 by or in 2010 that is when they will take advantage of blu-ray and use it in there console. Playstation 3 in the mean time needs to be able to take advantage of this oppurtunity with blu-ray and come out with some great graphics games, multiplayer madness with 60 person online, and huge levels that xbox will not be able to compete with. Online xbox live defintley wins but in my opionon not when u are paying 5 bucks a month.
