So, if you’re going to brave the lines for a PlayStation 3 (and from what we hear, bring a baseball bat and a full body armor), there are a list of things you should know about regarding various issues the console has at this time. These are normal, especially in the first-generation of a piece of electronics as complicated as the PlayStation 3, and most of these issues should be resolved in future System Updates (we hope). Until then, it’ll help all you early-adopters decide as to whether your console is worth a round of real-life Mortal Kombat:
- Lack of upscaling: Simply put, if your HDTV does 1080i but not 720p, then expect to play your games in 480p, as the PS3 will not upscale the graphics to 1080i. Bummer.
- Overheating: While it’s not as bad as the Xbox 360’s issues (read: no dead consoles), a lot of retailers are reporting test boxes overheating. We’ll chalk this up to the semi-airtight plastic enclosure until more users get to use the console in the open.
- Backwards-compatibility: Several PSOne/PS2 games don’t work correctly with the PS3 yet; this should be remedied with upcoming System Updates. Until then, check out IGN’s backwards compatibility list here.

I am on my third ps3. The first one quit with a flash of light and would not turn on again the second one quit displaying a picture on my tv however it would still turn on. I am of coarse extremely worried that my third ps3 is going to become a useless 600 dollar paper wait. Anyone else have a similar experience with there ps3?
dude i had a problem with mine.. my first made a ticking sound (but i think thats normal cuz my second one did too) My second one after like 11 days of using, started Freezing like crazy, while playing gnames, and while not (so in main menu even) Also the bigger problem (or as big) the screen was pixelating using HDMI or even Composite cables… so like screen wuz supposed to be black with say saying resistnace in the center, but on the bottom o fthe screen it would be pixalating (large blue boxes of messed up picture) and now im on my thrid one and EB games manager is mad at me cuz like hters been no ps3 problems before an dim the only one to return two consoles… i hope this one works out fine.. but i think that Ninja Gaiden Sigma messed up ps3…:S
Hey, since 2 days my ps3 started not loading games anymore, i put in disk of motorstorm or COD4 and nothing happends i’m really getting tired as first i had alot of problems with connection… if someone can help me plz do :)

I just got ps3 used it for 3 days started making a noise and finally shut down and would not turn on again. There are no lights on we also had a problem loading call of duty 4 while the console was working. Did anyone faced the same problem?

Ive had my ps3 4 about 3 months now and all was fine till a week ago. it started not reading discs. now it doesnt read any playstation games, funny thing is it reads all dvds and cds fine. as soon as i place a disc in the slot, you can hear it clicking over as if the lens is faulty or isnt reading the disc properly. now sony say i have to wait up to a month for it to be fixed. anyone had the same problem, and if you were able to resolve it lemme know.

Hi i just bought my ps3 the day after christmas and i also bought nfs pro street and it was working fine for the first 2 days then on the 3rd of playing it as i loaded the race it counted down 3, 2, 1, and then froze on the spot. I took it back thinking the console is stuffed and it was working perfectly with sum other games they had there (Juiced 2, and F1 2007) i then changed the same game with another disc brang it home, connected it up turned it on and it now doesn’t even load at all but i can hear it working just not showing nothing on the screen. What in the world is wrong with it, its pissing me off from 1 problem to another. I previously owned a PS2 and i actually had no problems with it.
Please help me cos i feel like smashing it with a hammer lol :(

I have had a ps3 since the launch date in the UK, and the only major problem that I have had from it is the ability to play game published by EA, with the exception of the Godfather every EA title I have owned had caused me a problem these include, NFS carbon, NFS pro street, Fight night, Skate, Fifa 08, The Simpson’s & Def & Jam: ICON. This problem however is not just with ps3 games made by EA also affected are Ps2 titles like, Fifa 07, The Sims. All other titles that I own with the exception of Assassins creed (Fixed with firmware) work perfectly these include, Resistance, Motor storm, Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly Sword, Conan, Uncharted, Fear, Splinter Cell, Genji. Furthermore on a complaints website ran by EA regarding the problems with Fifa 08 messing up consoles they openly acknowledge the problem and have stated that they are not prepared to act on the problem, as the issue only relates to a small minority of systems. My opinion is small minority or not a company with this much regard in the gaming world should endeavour to release top quality games rather than the garbage they have lately.
My other problem consists of the wifi connection, at first I could only get a connection working at 12 to 15 percent however this was also the case with my laptop and psp, I was with ntl/virgin media at the time using a router I bought myself. I have now switched to Sky broadband and haven’t had a single problem with my connection since.

I bought an xbox 360 elite just towards the end of summer and immediately had problems with it, within 2 weeks it had destroyed all the games I had for it and some DVDs too it also developed the ring of death, as my post above states I have had minor problems with my Ps3, so overall Ps3 is better value for your money and in my opinion will last a lot longer.

I have a ps3 and at first I played it on a normal tv [not plasma or anything].
It worked fine then I played it on a plasma screen and connected the hdmi cable. It worked fine then I decided to connect it back up with the normal tv and it wouldn’t work. I firgured out that it must be the hdmi cable because the sound and video only pass through it. I went to settings and tried to change it but it doesn’t work the screen just goes black and after 30 secs and returns to the original screen. Does anyone know how to fix it.

i just got my ps3 about 4 weeks ago. It was working just fine up til now. recently while playing tiger woods 07 my tv will just shut off. I own a toshiba plasma 720p. the tv works fine with everything else only when im playing games. any ideas?
The PS3 connects to the internet and I can play online but when I invite friends or they invite me to join a game it says “NOTICE, Unable to join game session.”

Hi I’ve got Fifa 08 and for some reason a few days ago when I’m playing the fans have gone from the stadium. Is it normal or do i need a new Fifa 08? Anybody no how 2 fix it?
NFS Pro Street… carear mode, a couple frozen races, no big deal. Compleated 47% of races had about 200 k in the bank, was buying parts for my cars, it started saying I had no money, then the money in my account went from 200 k to reading ” $./*..,; ” or priety close to that, and yet still lets me buy repair markers or total markers. I sucsesfully entering some money cheats about 3-4 of them, and still the account hasnt changed, I’ve also raced in other races trying to win back the money, to no avail. I have about 25-30 hours on my ps3. So far other games seem to be just fine, Motor Storm, Sonic, and Uncharted, are others that I still play. I’ll keep an update on futor problems.
i have a 40gig and the only problems i have come across is that it fails to load some graphics in time or at all. sega rally, you could only see the track 10metres in front of you, very annoying. and assassins creed whole cliff faces and plains would be missing, i’d walk out into thin air and bam, it froze
I had my PS3 for less than a week. All worked fine until I tried to get online with Call of Duty 4. It would update 5% and stop. After repeated tries it crashed the wireless network in my house and froze while exiting the update screen. Since then i have repaired my network but i have these problems: longer than normal load times and sometimes it will freeze in the loadscreen on Oblivion and Motorstorm.

Same thing happened to me. I was playing COD4 then the video just went out. After restarting the PS3 started making this really annoying high pitched “sqeal”. I figure it’s one of the fans, as I finally got the video back up and running by disconnecting my HDMI and using the A/V cables thet were supplied with the system. But now all I get is a “the system is running too hot and will be shut down” message. God, I’m getting pretty pissed. Methinks I shall be exchanging my unit in the AM :(
I got my ps3 right after christmas and had no problems till last week. I have been playing it on a regular tv and went to play madden one day and noticed a humming noise comming from the tv. The next thing i noticed is lines going from bottom to the top of the screen. well my first thought was the tv is messing up, so i tried another tv with the same results (humming and lines). It was so bad for a day so i kept playing it just thinking it might go away. Two days later i cant even play a game because the screen goes in and out and the humming is louder and the screen is shaky. I know for sure its not the tv and i have searched the web for ansewers with no results. if anybody has a suggustion please help. i would hate to know i just wasted $600 on a ps3 80g

I’ve had my PS3 for almost a year and was problem free until I downloaded the update for Folding at Home. When I turned it on the next day I coud hear it but half the screen was green and the other a glitch. What the hell?
ive read a couple of comments and im like wow! most you guys have to admit that your burning out your ps3 either buy playing to long or having it sitting somewhere with other electronics not allowing your ps3 to breatheand when a problem happens you leave out the main reason why it happened, i fix computers and most the time the problem is because a lot of people are slow in the brain and doesnt avoid the littlest thing thats common sense..so your either burning out the ps3 or turned it off during an update or you have kids in the house that mess around with your system while you are gone or you might have had a defective one from the start which is very rare, it funny how sony has it that none were defective but you guys care claiming you had to buy a new..why didnt you send it in to sony to avoid buying a new one…sony gives you a year without from the purchase date to return it so they can fix without paying(maybe just shipping and handling and dont take out the warranty sticker by opening it up then they wont fix nothing it becomes voided)so whats up guys i smell idiots and lies, you destroyed your ps3 and for the guy who said he had it on a regular t.v then put it on a plasma with the hdmi then switch it back to the regular t.v and it did not work..duuuhhhhh read your manual which came with the ps3..when switching back to a regular t.v when turning on your ps3 keep your finger on the power button so the settings a switch back to the t.v..try reading once in your life, another comment ive read was about the lines going up and making a humming sound which mine did , the problem stop when i brought a plasma and a hdmi cord so it is not your ps3 , i think it either had to be either the regular ps2 cord or the port for the cord or maybe the ps3 to strong for a lil cheap t.v so i dont care how big your t.v is if you dont have a real hdtv(plasma or lcd) to me its not even worth playing the ps3 due to lack of details in the graphics that you would notice on a big screen and p.s i dont want to hear about my use of grammer and vocabulary this is just a post that ive decide to post as quick as possible not english 101..and stop bashing the ps3 some of you dont even own a ps3 and are just xbox lovers so you claim you brought 3 or 4 ps3 due to a burnout just to bash the system.
another thing, how is the ps3 a total rip off, did you see how much the cheapest name brand of a blu-ray disk player cost you got to be kidding me plus you dont pay to go online and a bluetooth can be brought cheaper that a xbox headpiece ..put it this way, to have a xbox with almost (hddvd)the same features the ps3 has is a rip off cause that all adds up buddy..it cost sony more money to make the system to sell for less which is a steal believe it or not…just make sure you keep your ps3 updated because i know a lot of people who have a ps3 and dont have the internet so that may be another reason why your system messed up…what you think the updates are there for to fix all the bugs and make the machine better!

i have had a few problems with mine any problems you encounter you should ring sony and they replace it, at irst myn wouldnt load the discs this is because of update 2.00 i think, everything went wrong as soon as i updated it, after it was replaced it wouldnt play in hdmi soo it also had 2 be sent back, thankfully my new 1 wokrs fine
get a laser cleaning disk that usualy makes it work again
same problem as everyone else, worked great for about 2 weeks, it just stopped in the middle of watching planet earth series, then it only played dvds for little while then stopped playing anything all together. Called sony and gotta wait for the new one to show up. The only thing that pisses me off is that the warranty from sony is only 90 days , come on sony people are forking out a lot of money for your system and your giving us something that you obviously didnt test the hell out of. At least gives a 1 year warranty.
Seriously, i’m a huge fan of ps3, as i’ve always been with sony. i’ve even dedicated a website to it. But in all honesty, i recommend you guys to just get a cheap blue-ray player, because thats the only positive thing i have to say about my ps3. I’m on my 3rd unit, and just can’t stand the continuous problems i have had with it regarding overheating/runtime errors. My friend has a 360 and we compared the graphics/animation/framerate, etc on the exact same games and the 360 just absolutely dominated.
In conclusion: ask for a full refund and go buy a 360 and a cheap blue-ray player. The best move you’ll make.
OK so I have sent my ps3 back 2 times I have my 3rd Ps3 dead on the floor right now…. Ok heres what its plugged into , I have a panasonic 32″ 480i , a directv reciver and a dvd/home audio unit. I plug into the front of the TV ,it plays fine. It seems that when you unplug it without powering off the ps3 the yellow wire sparks and it kills the vidoe card. WTF , you think I would learn but somone in the house didnt get the memo and unplugged the ps3 while it was on… so I then check it to see if it was really fried by plugging it into my directv unit and the yellow cable touches the dvd player and sparks like crazy.( the ps3 was off) WTF . so I try another tv and confirmed the ps3 video was dead, well nothing to lose I go back to the livingroom and try one more time plugged into the dvd player an to the tv through a svideo cable and I get freakin shocked. Real nice.

i bought my ps3 the week it came out and ive had it over a year now. it was workin fine until a few days ago. now when i play a game it will freeze sometime within an hour. i will turn it off and go back to the title screen and it will freeze in a different way. the audio is fine but all that shows up on the screen is a buch of random green and black colors. if it isnt doin that then its doin somethin tht looks like the codes in the matrix. anyone havin similar problems???
Just got the new PS3 80G for my anniversary gift. Opened it up, plugged it in and it won’t recognize any CD’s, DVD’s, BD’s or Games. LAME!!!

I tried to install Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 but things went wrong!Then PS3 didn’t do anything and the screen was black.I removed the HDD and connected it with my PC.It was working but there was no available partition, so I decided to create one and as a result the HDD was complitelly erased!When I inserted it inside the PS3 and turned it ON there was nothing on the screen!(I almost had a heart attack!)I’m BEGGING YOU give show me the way in order to reverse the SPELL and have my PS3 back
the exact same thing has happend to me twice, 1st time it happend it fixed itself after playing on a few demos but happend again last night and wont work this morning, took it back to the shop (woolworths) and they wont return the playstation for me i have to find a sony helpline number which isnt even on their own website how shit is that!

I have the same problem as most people, I put in COD4 was playing a chapter and the sound went out so I finished the chapter thinking that I’d reset after but it froze on the loading screen so then I quit game and it froze again except on a black screen so I ejected the disc and it reset immedeitly so I put the disc back in and it wouldnt come up on the games menu and now it wont read any discs!!!!
I have a huge problem and it is really pissing me off! When I turn my PS3 on it starts up and says “Sony Computer Entertainment” like normal right? So, that goes away and I wait for the menu to come up…and nothing happens. I just sit there waiting for my PS3 to let me play my freakin’ game, and it doesn’t. It just has those floating lines on the screen. Please try to help me out here.

i’ve had my ps3 problem free for the last 4 months, plus i’ve taken care of it, and when i play, at least every 2 hours or so, check if its heating up
you just have to know how to take care of shit and problems dont happen

My first one has to go because my CD was snapped in half and it scratched the red-eye laser inside the pS3.
Okay, but now my second one, jus keeps going off, i see a flashing red light ever since it goes off, i press it, den turn it bak on …. i was happy to play it again but then again it turned off and had those red flashing light, what is the problem? How can i fix this problem?
Please help me because i love playing the PS3.

I am a little disturbed with Shanko’s comments. Here I sit looking for common problems with other PS3’s as mine is loading and still loading Madden 08. Looks like I’ll still be loading when I am done writing this note. And this is not the only game doing this. Don’t give me a line that I don’t take care of my equipment and that I am an idiot. Shanko these people have legitimate complaints. We are all comparing our PS3 to our PS2. None of us had this much trouble with the older unit. None of us would have bought the PS3 if it hadn’t been for the success of the PS2. Plain and simple Sony went too fast in production and the PS3 hardware is not ready for the street users. What Sony needs to do is find a way to help out the folks that are frustrated with their units. I can’t send my unit back to the store, it was a gift with no receipt and sending it back to Sony is half the price of the unit itself. So I am stuck with the problems I have. Also I am not an Xbox guy, and will never be one. So here I sit waiting for my game to load up and I’ll continue my internet search for solutions about the PS3.

I have a 40 gig PS3 for about 2 months and noticed it cannot read ps1, dvd’s, cd’s and some ps3 games “uncharted” called sony and they are sending me a box to repair/replace :( Bummer never had bad luck with Sony products in the past
IVe had mine 2 days, and for some reason the AV wont work at all, ive done the 5 second thing to get the tv working to the appropriate settings etc and it just doesnt work! However yesterday it was working fine! its so confusing! Has the scart got something wrong with it or is their a fault with the PS3:S

i would have to agree with tobias, about Shanko’s comments, the people on here are just voicing their problems about their PS3 and the disappointments they have in them, and many of them treat their consoles as one of the kids, i treat my consoles with care and guard them with my life(figuratively:) i had a lot of optimism about the PS3 based on the fact that it had wireless card, blue tooth and blue ray capabilities all included in the price, and the controller is way light in weight, my problems come when i haven’t even played my that much and yes like everyone else my PS3 after a few minutes of even being ON shuts off. I’ve only owned it for maybe a month and have only beat one game(when most people have beat many more than that in a months time of owning a console) and besides the fact that it doesn’t work any more is the fact that the new 40g isn’t even backwards compatible. shanko doesn’t realize that by allowing a console to be backwards compatible makes the gaming industry better! why, its the fact that companies have to come out with much better games for the systems for consumers to be wiling to fork out the cash to buy them, thus making games in the future better, now i am an xbox fan in the fact that xbox payed for me to send mine in and fix it for free, now that i know that there are problems with keeping the systems cool i bought an inter cooler and have had no problems with my xbox, now if the PS3 gets so hot how is sony going to fix the problem so we dont have to come on forums to complain about it. also the xbox is backwards compatible for many games not all but many. ninja gaiden is one of my favorite games, which was an original xbox game and works on the 360, but after seeing the new( by new i mean better graphics and more options but pretty much same game) ninja gaiden game really would like to buy it, it is the same game play but better. when gaming companies can do this they make money because people want to buy them. i really hope that sony realizes the console has problems and do what is necessary to fix the problems like xbox did, and for the reason that the competition between xbox and PS3 will only make them better for future game play. i’m sure many will want to bash and tell me i’m wrong but i don’t care. this is my opinion. all in all SONY GET YOUR S#$T IN LINE!!!
my ps3 started to stick with assasins creed and after i beat it i went back to wwe smackdown vs raw and that was it. no cds reading. my problem is will sony fix mine

First off im not a fan or dislike of either PS3 or XBOX 360. I like both. People wonder weither or not to buy PS3 or 360. It depends on what you want. XBOX has better games and better graphics yet has many prolems regarding their ram chips and other things. The XBOX has a bad Cooling system. My friend succesfuly fixed his 360 after its RROD incident. 360’s have a 33% failer rate. On the other hand PS3’s have a better cooling system, slightly less graphics, and only a 3% failer rate. As of now PS3 only has a couple excusive games out but will have more in this year. Plan and simple like you want it is get a PS3 if your looking for the longer lasting system.
P.s. My freind that fixed his 360 said microsoft and all its fan boys can go get F#C#E#,(fill in the numbers signs ;)……) because their scaming their customers. The only reason his never breaks anymore is because its MODed for better cooling.
I had my ps3 for about 4 months and it stopped playing all disks. In australia we have a 1 year warranty. first month of the warranty is replacement with a new console and the other 11 months is repair of console or replacement with a refurbish console what ever is easier for sony. I didnt pay $1000 australian for a refurbish console. The way sony treats its customers is rubbish

My Ps3 wont play games.Eny of them.I tried about 6 Games and it dont work.i have had it for 3 months and 2 weeks ago it stopped working.There is no scratches on eny of my games either.Lucky I didn’t get a xbox 360 elite it would catch fire by the sound of things.
Message for sony: your better than xbox but make it work longer!!!!

I got one in Shoptime (Brazil) and it can’ be turned on for more than 5 minutos. The screen display a message:
“the system is running too hot and will be shut down”
Wow……….am I glad I stumbled into this forum. I had no idea the PS3 was so trouble prone and unreliable. I bought a PS3 40gb two days ago and was stunned to learn it was not downwardly compatible with PS2 and PS games and promptly returned it………….what a crock of sheiss!
Video games are simply software. Playstations are simply computers with simple operating systems with lots of graphics acceleration and a peripheral or two (Blue Ray, Shmu Ray). If each new version MS Windows or Apple operating system software required users to purchase a new library of application software, how rapidly do you think desktop computing technology would have evolved? (a rhetorical question) Downward software incompatibility by design speaks loudly of a shamefully exploitive marketing attitude at Sony. The 60gb model Sony produced was downwardly compatible with their earlier games but was intentionally discontinued.
Thankfully in my situation the retailer (Target) was willing to take my PS3 disappointment back and provide a full refund. I’m now sitting on the sidelines, money in hand, waiting for a clear leader to emerge in this goofy gaming industry. Sony and its competitors should well understand that in a market economy, consumers vote with their wallets. As in politics, it’s difficult to hide a history of poor performance from the electorate.

ive had my ps3(and i have a wii) 4 over a year- i got it when it a little after first came out and ive had no problems whatsoever exept it freezing(mabe it happened like 3 times) so it sucks 4 u guys i dont know how i can help i mean my system is backwards compatable and everything so now i know from reading thei that i (and some of my friends) are happy ps3 owners

LOL….so everything is running fine still though my games aint working , ive been reading over the internet that most ppl had this problem till they upgraded there “firmware” and then there games played fine. Well ive upgraded to 2.20 and my games stoped working so i guess maybe , hopefully i wont have to wait to long for an update and my games will work again,

Hey guys, i read just about all your postings and here is what happend to mine, 40gig strip down model. I Actually bought an external cooler for the ps3 thinking just in case it had over heating problems. Well one night i left in on overnight, ten hours, and the very next day i booted it up, 2 minutes of it being on it made a strange beep, as if coming from inside the case, not to be confused with the normal beep when u turn it on, and a clicking noise or two. A week later the wifi and network card just straight up stopped working. Called sony and they said to me ” sounds like hardware failure” and said that ship me a new one right away. They did so with little complaining from me, which leads me to believe that the 40gig maybe having hardware issues. I mean, why would they just send me a new one before even trying to fix mine? Im sure Sony is taking a big hit, meaning it cost more to make them then what they sell it for, and they just send me a new one no questions asked? Sounds like they are trying to weed out deffective models to avoid what happend to xbox360 where people had to ship numerous consols before fixing the problem.
Hey and for those guys that think people are abusing their systems are being dooped. If you think Sony would let the public know they are having problems your just plain stupid, there are billions at stake here and if they were having hardware issues?? you would be the last to know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this whole thing with my ps3 not reading ps3 games nor blue ray disc sucks but it will play regular dvds and ps2 games. it started on the fifth of this month. i called tech support and since my ps3 was out of warranty its gonna cost me 150 bucks to replace it, but i am geting another 60gb. now the only thing is the “new” one has only 90 days warranty not the 1 year. not only that, i have to get a memory stick with enough memory to back up all my data. they dont recommend using cd’s. but i learned if you have any questions tech support is helpful as long as your not an *** when you call.

ya my ps3 just now broke on me after about four months. it was freezing up to the point where i had to turn the console off to get it to work again. the next month is when it just stopped on me. it will start up and everything but the icons on the menu screen wont come up but my back round is still there. whats up with that?
Dude mine just did the same thing today and its my second ps3 along with four ps2’s that had the same issue it starts the game saying playstat… and then quits with a error message same as what’s happening to you. Sony is paying for shipping and everything but its going to take 5 days to send the system in and then 10-14 days to get it back. Bul…… i’m so pissed off about this. Screw sony i knew i should have bought a 360 but my ps3 fanboy side of me came out.

I have had 2 PS3’s and 2 t.v.s blow up in the last 2 weeks. The first time it happened we thought it was just a freak accident but now that it has happened a second time I am mad. I can probably get Sony to replace the PS3’s but I guess I’m just S.O.L. as far as the t.v.’s go……it happened while the video/audio cords were being plugged into the t.v.. I have searched online and found other people that had the same problem and most people are telling them it must have been the t.v. but I don’t buy it because it happened to 2 different t.v.’s for me. Anyone else have this problem or know what the cause could be?
Ninja Gaiden sigma seemed to kill mine. I have had this system for three months, nothing went wrong with it, it was fine and dandy. Then just yesterday as I was playing ninja gaiden sigma (playing as the awesome rachel) I ran to a save point and bam the whole thing froze, I could’nt do anything, so I turned it off, just thinking oh it might have just frozen and will work fine when I turn it off and back on (via the main power switch on the back) I was terribly wrong! It came up fine as anything. The only problem, it would’nt play any of my games (Ps3, Ps2, Ps1). Not even music Cds or DvDs. Makes me really sad, cause I have been a Playstation fan ever since the first one came out. I’am having really big doubts about the whole thing. I’am really just thinking of getting a Wii or something and forgetting about Ps3 altogether. :/

I had the PS3 since christmas 2007. Never had a problem til yesterday May 26th. My nephew played the system for about 5 hours. The system over heated and the movie we played started over by itself, then the screen turned pink and the color on the blueray wouldnt come back to normal. I tested it this morning and its working normal now. Is there a way to keep it cooler while running for hours on end?

I have had 3 PS3’s. The first one smoked up on me and was under warrenty and was covered. The secound on turned off and would not come back on and the 90 day warrenty was up and i payed $149.00 to have it fixed. The thired one lasted another 90 days and did the same thang. Thats anouther $149.00 to fix it. As much as it is they need to have a better warrenty on them. @yrs would be nice.
I ve had my PS3 since august of 07 have never had a problem until the end of this month (may 08). I was playing fifa 08 and all of a sudden it froze so i restarted the game and then all this blue squares appeared on the screen like the graphics were messed up. It took me about 6 restarts before it finally came up. I was able to play for about 2 hours and same thing happened. Now it will only start but nothing comes up in the screen its just black. Why do they make such pieces of crap for 499. THey could at least giving us lifetime warranty. I feel like breaking it and sending it in to show them what i thinkof their crap.

I have had ps3 for about 6 months and it has been working great until last week. I use it on a 1080i tv through a hdmi cable, and now the sound goes in and out every couple of seconds. It is fine with the composite cables and it wasn’t the hdmi cable i had cuz i replaced it and the same thing happened. I have been looking online for anyone else with the same problem but I haven’t seen anything. Need to know if I should just return it or call for repair. Can anyone help??
Im waiting for my new ps3 on Monday as the old one stopped working after playing GTA, went to yellow light then flashing red? My ps3 sits in a open shelf stand so its got plenty of fresh air.
Friend no1 sent his back two weeks ago wouldnt recognise discs.
Friend no 2 also sent his back six weeks ago due to freezing and not recognising discs.
Surely Sony need to be pulled up about this, its a lot of money to spend on a machine that seems to always break down after a few months.
Dont get me wrong i love the system and also own a sony amp and LCD TV without any problems but the PS3 is very temperemental i will get a 2 year add on warranty when this runs out as i have to confess i dont rate the PS3`s reliability.

I Just performed the latest update and after it was complete I tryed to play gta4 and the system will not play games or dvd or blue ray. Everything else works fine. I also can not find the receipt So I am really F*#ked I called Sony and was charged 150.00 and they are sending me another unit with only 90 day warrn. I got the system for x-mas of this year and I dont play many games. It sits on a file cabinet next to a window so it gets clean fresh air and hardly any sun hits that side of the house so I dont think it is getting to hot. And I have a electric dust zapper on my air system so dust is not an issue. I think it is a design problem and I think sony should fix it for free with the serial numbers. I will probably get it fixed and sell it. I am really thinking of getting xbox? I have only had playstation systems in the past but I think a new model name is coming into the house.
My friend was playing a oblivion with my ps3 and and while it was saving the system shut its self off but wit no red light for the stand by. Now the system will not turn back on and my game disc is stuck in there. I called up Sony because I bought it in November and it still was under warranty But i lost my receipt and even though I registered it they will not touch it unless I pay Sony 140.00 I am so frustrated because when I had a problem wit my xbox 360 Microsoft fixed it with no problems. I keep hearing how bad it is when xbox360s mess up but at lest they fix the problem without any questions. I only wish Sony would show better customer service and be cool with there warranty and fix my ps3. I regret ever buying a ps3. Has anyone ever had a problem like with with Sony’s Customer Service? if I had to do it all over again maybe just maybe I would have listen to them Xbox and Wii fan boys. better yet maybe I would have never bought that system to begin with. Maybe I should call the better business people and complain about Sony and how I am being treated.

mine has just stopped reading discs altogether, quick call to sony UK (08705998877) and they said this was a common fault, took my serial number, name and address and said a new system would be sent as soon as poss, (roughly 1 week) unfortunate that it has these problems but cant fault their willingness to sort it out, suppose ill just ride it out as i love my ps3, good look to all you guys having problems with them out there and couldnt agree more that its stupid for sony not to have the number on their site!

Owned my ps3 since the launch with no issues. Recently bought metal gear 4. upon inserting the disc, was informed that i needed to update the firmware in order to play the game. After the update installed and the system restarted, the ps3 no longer will read a disc. No blu-ray, ps3 game, dvd, cd, i mean nothing. Sony is more than happy to assist with the problem for $150. Before you update the firmware on your machine, cross your fingers.

My ps3 has been working fine since september 2007. Yesterday I bought DBZ burst limit and it froze during loading. Can happen ofcourse. After this it showed an error. And after that I could not read disc’s. No reason to panic! Shut it off and did not play the whole day. The day after I played another game and it frozes too. Every freaking game i play freezes. Anyone has the same problem?
Mine wont read any discs. it started by freezing occassionally for two days. now they want be to ship it out for a refurbished one!!! im going to buy one from bestbuy and return it when i get mine back!! also i noticed when i insert the discs, they dont spin. they come out facing the same way i inserted them. im trying the complete re-fromatt now. 5 hours remaining!! i saved what i could to a usb flash drive. anyway keep posted if the re-formatt helps any (i dont expect it too, but its worth a try). THIS SUCKS!!!
ALso, i havent seen any solutions to this. it looks like a hardware issue. i did my 2.42 fw weeks ago. it is very widespread and i see thousands of blogs and videos of people with the same problem. sony neds to step up and claim responsibility so it wony keep happening to future customers!!!

I borrowed a PS3 of my sisters boyfriend until i get my own soon. And i was playing GTA 4 and i just started playing it in the morning, i pressed pause and the screen went black… nothing happened.. i waited for a few minutes and nothing, so i turned it off, and turned it back on, and it got to the main PS3 screen were you log in a stuff and were the game loads and the game wasnt being read by the PS3. If anyone one knows what has happened please help :) Im reconsidering getting a PS3, i might get a Xbox 360… have to see

Had mine 9 months then today it wont recognise that iv put a disc in, game, dvd or blu ray. Still under warranty so i phoned customer service on 08705998877 and they are replacing it with a shiny new one in under a week. top service. Hope this helps.

From the UK, and have a UK ps3, was playing GTA 4 the other day, it installed over 3GB of the game Data on the HDD, Played the game, saved it after your shown to Romans room etc and Roman goes off to take the Cab back at the very begining of the game, Decided to turn off the game after it had fully saved via the PS button and quit as normal, took out the Disc, and turned off the console to watch some TV
Well, I turn it back on about an hour later to carry on my GTA 4 game, and it just started a new go from the begining intro, I first thought maybe Auto load was disabled but checked it and it wasn’t, plus my saves were gone
I turned off the game again and took the Disc out, went into my consoles HDD saves area and it was saying No saves were there, and also the Games initail 3GB installation was not showing but it must be there as when I put the game back on it doesn’t need to install the 3GB again
I am currently on my second system as the first one was making a rattling noise inside the optical drive and had other minor problems, my brothers have a PS3 and there’s works fine, I even borrowed it for a while before getting my own and I had No problem with there’s, I thought what a fantastic unit the PS3 is
Well I’ve also tried to connect to the internet on my PS3, and download the latest system update but it keeps saying it can’t connect even though all the settings are right, so last night I went directly to the web address given in the consoles guide to download the update and I burned it to a CD-R Disc, put in in the console and it just said there was no data on it for the console to use
I am very surprised that the PS3 is having so many problems, I have built my own high spec PC’S in the past so no one can call me an idiot, I have truly exhausted all advice given by Sony’s manual and online guide but the console just isn’t interested

I work for a large games retailer in the UK.
The problems we see with the PS3 are as follows.
1. – The mode has been set wrongly for the tv output – turn off the machine and then power it on but hold your finger on the power button – it will then beep after about 5 seconds – turn it off then back on and you should be back on the default composite analogue output.
2. – Disc drive failures – those of you complaining about in game freezes / pauses, or discs no longer reading have a dead drive. This is a problem the original PS2 suffered too. Sony just don’t make disc drives that last. The amount of people we get with PS2’s that won’t read either cd’s or dvd’s is immense, you can spot them as they will ask if the discs they are buying are blue or not. With the PS3 they seem to just give up reading discs of any kind and will sit on the menu screen showing an empty drive.
3. Overheating – usually the consoles that this happens too just fail to show anything or crash in the menu’s.
Hope this helps some of you.

**** *** shanko i have seen where a ps3 can be put and for how long – also it has had no problems to date, before you say they dont know what they are talking about try having a problem that cant be fixed.
before you even start to answer there problems i advise looking a little more deeply at the ACTUAL ps3 and its architecture – you may get some jaw dropping surprises when you think about how it works.
p.s. the PS3 has very grave concerns when it comes to overheating.
sorry quoted wrong section for about – but still shanko get to grips with what it can do and if you did actually read some of them you would have read that some HAVE sent them back to SONY to get fixed.
first ones released were backwards compatable with ps2 only but sony later removed it and if memory serves me right some areas did not get it at all.
before anyone thinks i dont like ps3 – i have a ps2 and was hoping for something better that what has been offered up in the form of the ps3.
only if you download illegal software to the ps3 – and it is hard enough to create a game for it so i doubt a virus would be created so soon if at all.
I have read through some of the posts again and there is a serious problem i have noticed, and it is not the ps3 shutting off mid game or anything – it is the fact that some of you are getting cracked disks, if you get a cracked disk DO NOT put another disk in the drive as it is likely the drive is cracking it, it is highly unlikely that a system update of any kind if at all will fix it.
Dont put other disks in as
1) there could be bits of that disk still in the drive (regardless if it is the disk or the drive that is the cause) and.
2)it could crack that disk and make the problem worse.
If you feel that it is not that serious and it could be a flaw in the actual disk – get a cleaner for the drive, use it 2 or 3 times might sound over kill but the blu ray laser is a lot thinner than a normal drives laser – take back the disk and try and get a replacement but in general it is likely that the drive is causing it.
I was hoping to find a good reason to get a PS3 (it seemed that i could get what i wanted in the xbox360 for less) but with all the problems and issues (refurbished PS3s) i dont think i will be getting my own PS3 any time soon.
i have an xbox 360 and it is my second one and im now having problems with it. the first overheated to much and the new one i got is getting errors. i was thinking about getting ps3 this weekend and am looking online to see the problems people are facing. it seems that both system have there problems and it suck because we spend all this money on these systems and then they dont work or brake. its a gamble on either system
If your PS3:
Stops reading ps3 games but still reads PS2 games.
Sometimes loads a game but will not update if required.
Doesn’t load anything.
That problem is due to not keeping your system clean. it is found to happen within first month of purchase or maybe even after a year of having it. While rare it is free to repair if still under warranty.
So, keep your systems clean! and if you have to! save and get the add on cooling fans to keep everything going, especially if you are a hardcore gamer.

And if you want your PS3 to suffer a early death: buy a intercooler thingy and overload your standard PS3 cooling fans till they die! If it gets too hot in your opinion, put your PS3 in a open, ventilated place, like on top of a desk or something ,instead of in a isolated wooden box!

the av multi out start making a loud noise, i though it was the cable, and i did a test using my home theater and my regular tv, and the noise still there, i switch the multi out cable and still made the noise. thats a ****** answer ur no sony fan…ive been with sony for years.ive had my ps3 since release. ive had no prob till now i got the yellow power bar…but im not complainig imma get a nother one in 2weeks…how long would u wait for your 360 after u get the red ring…u wait more than 2weeks possbly more than a month u kno y cause dudes are sendn 360 back like crazy cause the red ring of death so its hard gettn back everyones 360 so fast. and the ps3 graphics compare to 360’s when it comes to multiplatformer games gonna look better cause the original test system for a multiplatform game was the 360 so u wouldnt b able to take advantage of the ps3 power…only game to do that was metal gear. it flled up all 50gb on the ps3 blu ray disc and only ran 64.8% of the ps3 full power….streetfighter 4 and every other game thats multiplatformer will use the ps3 as the test system…do ur research b4 u bash u 360 lover…p.s. the average blu ray system is more expensive then the average ps3 same wth the cheapest
when on the main menu, or on a game the screen keeps flashing..

i paid $1000 for a ps3 14 months ago and now, 2months out of warranty it wont read game discs,Sony want $300 just to look at it.what a joke.If you are thinking of getting a ps3 forget it
i have had my ps3 for over a year now and it has shit itsself. it was clear sailing from the start no problems. now the blu ray drive has died on me so i cant play any games on it. it wont take in the disc without a good push. and just yesterday it started to say cant find correct harddrive. i havent even f**King touched the harddrive and cause its out of warrenty f**king sony wants $315 (aud) to fix it… well to give me a other broken one they have fixed so pissed sony has gone down the shiter… but i can say i had 2 xbox 360’s before and they both f**ked up with in 2 weeks so sony is still better but f**k they are pissing me off
bloody rip off mate.. my console broke on about two months after i purchased it. I sent it back for repair and it took almost 2months. Then i was fine.. so i thought everything is good and bla bla.. so went a bought heaps of ****** expensive games. Today my console again broke down on me.. It doesn’t read game cds.. I was playing Tom Clancy Rainbow 6 when all of a sudden the game froze. I waited and waited.. and after no response i rebooted the bloody thing.. and then.. it didn’t show the game disk. I put in a movie disk.. works fine.. and then checked it with the game disk.. doesn’t work..
This is what pisses me off.. I rang the repair center and asked then if they could help me out with the problem.. They asked me to send it to them.. and quoted the price of $300 something.. to get it fixed, if it was out of warranty. I couldn’t believe my ears.. and i said.. “are you joking.. 300 bucks to fix it.. I can buy a new one online if i add a little bit extra”. So i asked them, since i had already the same problem before and the repair center had fixed it. I asked them what the problem was and how they fixed it the last time.. They said.. they couldn’t tell me. ” I ask, Why” , why the **** can’t they tell me, after i have spent 2months of my bloody wage on that ******* thing(including the console and the ******* expensive games that i had bought).
This time i am thinking of sending it to a chinese repair center to get it fixed. It will probably do it for cheaper and in less time.
This just happened today: when I turn mine on, the green light comes up, but then it shuts down after a yellow light appears and then it goes back 2 red. and the red light flashes a few times.
sony is making money out of people’s misery… bloody 300 to get it fixed.. and how long will it last again.. ??? maybe a week.. and then wat??? send it back again.. and wait another couple of months to have it fixed… The console that we buy stays with the repair center more than it’s meant to be with us.. I hope someone figures out soon how to fix this disk not reading problem..

But what a shame for Sony. After 4 month, my PS3 did not recognize any of my games. I send it back for reparation. Now it runs quite good. But it is cover with lots of scratches and smudges !!!!! I was really pissed of !!! So i call them back, and i must send it again …

I bought a PS3 two months ago. Shipped it outside the USA for my nephew in South America. Two weeks later the damned red lights started blinking and the system shut off. Sony offers no service outside the USA and requires a receipt for repair. I hate Sony. Take a look at Youtube, hundreds of frustrated sony clients have the same problem. Why doesn’t Sony just publish the solution to this problem.

Lisa, I just encountered this problem. I plugged my video cable into a TV from the ps3 and sparks shot out of the TV input (Funny thing is there was a wii plugged in too and it always worked fine). Now the TV won’t turn on and the ps3 doesn’t send out a video signal. How did Sony handle the TV getting wrecked? Also, did they transfer the data from your hard drive for you? I would myself but there is no picture. I assume I’ll get a new ps3. (still under warranty) Thanks for any info.
mine does the same thing i was playin saints row 2 and it froze so i turned it off and then tryed to load it and then it said problem occurred during load and then again so i turned it off and then it wont even show the game or dvd

I suggest a bit of reading and researching and fixing the problem yourself. it IS an easy fix and can be done in a little under an hour, including research on EXACTLY what to do…

I wont set back and see the 360 bashed no longer. I have 2 consoles and one of them is 1 gen, and i have had no problems out of eather of them. You just have to use your head and keep them cool. Just like a computer, are you gonna run a high end processor with just a case fan? No you gonna add what you need to keep it cool. In fact i have intercoolers on the back of both of them, and they run very cool. The 1st gen did freeze up when i first got it but it was blowing hot air out the back. After adding the intercooler it has never froze again. Use your head people.

Thats bull**** and you dont have to pay $300 to get the 360 fixed out of warranty, its about $95. The grafix on 360 blisters PS3 along with alot better framerate.

the 60GB is so bad, So i’m glad SONY discontinued it, it always freezes and won’t always load the picture. Bought it in June/14/07 and now 1/1/09 i’m now sending it back for the FOURTH TIME for repair, AMERICAN EXPRESS credit card members be advised you can get an EXTENDED WARRANTEE for ANOTHER FULL year one the PS3s. they were nice enough to refund my purchase $399 and am planning on getting a new one the next time it brakes, this truly SONYs worst product out on the market none of thier other products!
My PS3 succeeds in finding the IP Address but fails to connect to internet, also I don’t know if this helps at all or not but the internet on my computer messes up here and there too but works most of the time….can someone help me, this is frustrating me

You are just a f**** liar.Now listen some words of truth.I had an Xbox 360,but like a lot of people have hardware failures 4 times.For real. All times I call microsoft help and like you all notice, all times my X box 360 return broken but only last time last longer a few month if I recall.The last time try to repair it myself and last for a couple of weeks.But finally eats the dust.So I jumped to the PS3.For first glance is better designed,the Xbox360 is just chinese low quality crap.And about graphics are almost the same It’s a lie that the Xbox have better graphics.I saw it with my own eyes.But still I have my PS3 from little time no prob yet but I’m still aware.Don’t know if all this posts are real,maybe not but at least I can pick a view to them.I’m just afraid of the latest firmware 2.53 but until I install it don’t know if is troublesome.
My ps3 has been working for 1 year now and just stopped loading every game i have put in to it. The screen just goes blank and then nothing happens, i have tried GT5 prologue and COD4. Also the system doesn’t want to shut down, the green light flashes for ages so i just switched it off at the back.

Hey I have my ps3 for 13 months (80g) I did couple of mistakes first I pay cash for it and second I lost the receipt. I got my ps3 from game stop in the mall. I got an extra control. At the end of august I start having problems with one of the controllers and one week later the other one stop working. I called Sony and because of no receipt they did not do anything, I try to get a copy of the receipt at the store and they say they did not keep records that long. Know today my 12 year old son was playing cod4 and the ps3 shot off and it doesn’t want to start again, I called Sony immediately (and long story, short) they going to charge me $150. I don’t want to lose the game data of cod4 (I’m in level 55 of the last prestige) I was thinking that since is out of the warranty and I have to pay to get it fix, should I try to opened and fix it my self or should I take the hard drive out and send the ps3 without it? Something that I forgot to mention is that game stop did not offer me an extended warranty so there is no chance in hell to get cover with them; if I have to get another one it is going to be from Best Buy.

Hey guys/girls i have had my PS3 for about a year it has previously broken not reading disks but its good now until i bought a HD cord and i was playing COD4 and about 3 days later i was playing online and it just froze so i turned it of and then when i went to turn it back on it just came up with a screen full of different colored lines and you can just see the background but it dosent go into any game you can just see the sony background then when you press a button it freezes again

Turned It Back On A Day Later.
BANG.
It Started Humming LOUD!!!
So I Hit Eject.
The PS3 Happily And Quickly SHOT OUT THE DISC.
Restarted It.
Fine.
So About Half A Year Later.
Decide To Watch Jouney To The Center Of The Earth.
Watch It Fine.
Now To Watch Weidsville.
Same Night.
Straight After Journey 2 the center of the earth.
Put The Disk In.
Starts That Creepy Humming Sound Agaid.
Eject It.
It’s Fine.
No Reboot Needed.
Try It Again.
Same Thing.
Eject It.
Turn It Off.
Wait 5 Minutes.
Turn It On.
Put In A Comedy.
HUMMMMMM!!!
Take It Out.
Fine.
This Same Thing Keeps Hapening Each Time I Insert A DVD.
I Havent Yet Tried To Play The DVD With The Humming Sound.

We are wasting our money while they are getting richer. Maybe there is a reason why the warranty is only good for 1 year because you are going to have a problem FOR SURE!! My second PS3 just broke (i believe fans have failed) NEVER OVERHEATED!!! and I am reporting to BBB and you should all do the same!
I bought a 40gb ps3 from game stop in Aug 09. It has always frozen on me, on and off line. that was the last month the 40gb ps3 was sold, I wonder why? I was reluctant to send it in for repair. I called tech support, they told me reset to factory settings, I did. System still froze periodically. called again told me to reformat, system still freezes. I finally sent it in. They shipped out a replacement the same day they received mine. I am waiting for the arrival of replacement and hope it was not a mistake sending it in.
