"lacks any sort of PC client for storage and synchronization"?
i connected my samsung galaxy s to my pc and it immediately was recognized as a hard drive, i just dragged music and videos (xvid, divx, avis, no encoding to a different format required) and when i unplugged it, the phone scanned and found everything.
the only advice i can give u is maybe your phone was in debug mode? thats the only thing that'll prevent it from connecting sometimes
