CMI 720p 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D smartphone display revealed

Chimei Innolux (CMI) has revealed a new 4.3-inch smartphone display, offering glasses-free 3D as well as 720p HD resolution support. The new screen combines a CMI TFT panel running at 1280 x 720 resolution with Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier technology from MasterImage 3D, the specialist 3D company that Samsung invested $15m in back in March.

"The technology provides brighter images, reduced moiré effects (or rippled appearance) and the ability to work in any orientation – portrait or landscape" CMI claims, in a package ideally sized for a large smartphone. CMI isn't the first to offer a 720p phone-scale display – the Galaxy Nexus uses Samsung's 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD panel, for instance – but it's the first time that resolution has been paired with glasses-free 3D.

It's unclear when the new panel might be in production and ready for commercial devices, with CMI only showing off this demo version at FPD! International in Yokohama, Japan this week. Mobile 3D remains something of a niche market, though it's entirely possible that 720p could provide the tipping point.
