I totally agree, it does have a novelty quality about it and totally stopped using Speaktoit, Iris, and others I’ve tried. I find it much quicker just to use my fingers instead. Home use maybe, but in public definitely won’t use it.

To be honest, I’m just glad to find anything they don’t treat as a personal invention. However the Siri “relationship aware” idea does make a difference. For the record, I use Android.

Siri is the most overrated nonsense I have ever seen. Once the novelty wears off you barely use it anymore (although it is nice for setting your alarm.. but android probably has a voice command for that).

Siri often fails at basic questions like “What time do the Bears play tomorrow”… never even figured out I was talking about football.

It’s not changing anyone’s life.. it’s a toy for losers to show off to try and make themselves look cool.

Siri is still the best, which is still a beta. Once Apple truely intergrates Siri into all aspects of the iPhone 4s its game over.

I agree, the years of development (originally spearheaded by Dept. of Defense and continued by Siri’s development team)has produced something frighteningly advanced. I just hate when people propagate the execution of Siri commands as the “revolutionary” part and not the natural-language translating AI which is the real thing that should be aspired for and compared against. I honestly though still can’t give this credit to Apple as internally they did nothing, the entire project including its final implementation was handled by the Siri team (consequently owned by Apple) but this could have been done a year ago if Apple merely let the developers have access to the OS in meaningful ways. I feel like they saw the popularity, tried to create their own, failed, and then purchased Siri and put the team to work on the 4s implementation.

~By natural-language translating I don’t mean speech to text, I mean interpreting commands from everyday (not properly formatted) language, cause once you have the command its all college level project from there.

yes, that that’s a pretty big gap setting it apart, which is what all the fuss is about. The AI is the magic, its on the back-end sever side, its not text to speech, or speech to text,or voice command, its the next step, and Apple implemented it well, and its still only a beta.

Well unfortunately I gotta disagree there because voice apps have been getting weather, searching for restaurants, getting directions, and even setting/reminding about appointments for years. The main event, as they say, is taking natural language “commands”, taking “I feel like Chinese tonight” and interpreting as “search for nearby Chinese restaurants”. That and the Siri “personality” are the only things that set it apart from other voice command apps (assuming other apps integrate the services I mentioned in my other post).

Funky time machine there……Android and even Blackberry have had apps to do this for years. All Apple did is leapfrog……took something others were already doing, and improved on it. Now it’s the competition’s turn.

Not sure how that makes them late to the game when the competitors were doing this 3 years ago.

Not sure if you know this but the gogle implementation from 2 years ago has always had a cloud backend. It records your voice and sends it off to google to be interpreted. Super fast too.

Natural voice recognition *isn’t* the point of Siri, because other apps do that….DragonGo on the iPhone, as well as Cluzee, Speaktoit, etc.

Apple doesn’t have a monopoly on natural speech recognition….but they’ve done a good job of combining that with integration with all these other services.

guys what makes siri soooo special is its AI not its voice recognition features nor text to speech, its the way it can interpret what u said and understand what u meant. plus they made it to fake emotions and be sarcastic. cluzee as described is not and will never be a siri alternative, there are a loooootttt of apps that can do what cluzee does and even do it better…

They do if it’s Siri, because it works EXTREMELY well…which is to say that it does what you want it to do more often than if you asked a human personal assistant to perform the same tasks or answer the same questions. Consequently, I’ve begun to use it all the time now. It’s not perfect, but hopefully it will become far more perfect in short order.

I also have used Vlingo, which I still have on my phone. It’s okay, in the sense that I won’t use it unless it’s just been updated (so I can know whether or not it’s a practical tool yet), but it’s not really bad and could be helpful right now if you don’t have the necessary appendages required for typing.

Right now, Siri is the only version of this app class which is really worthy of regular use. The rest will be playing catch-up for awhile. Eventually there will be at least one worthy competitor, at which point everyone will learn that it’s a much better/faster interface than the keyboard. Hey, it took 6 or 7 years for most people to accept the fact that the GUI was vastly superior to a command line interface.

Based on the article. Siri is deeply integrated into the new iphone. Have not used that either but have both android and ios devices. Siri interestingly is an attempt at artificial intelligence that seems to be positioning itself to not only integrate with your phone but other devices in the future such as airplay (recievers, stereos, apple tv, future apple tv planned with sharp, etc.) and the myriad of apps and hardware. People are already starting their cars with siri. It seems to be an attempt at threatening the google search on the iphone (and future ios devices). Future apple tv is supposed to be voice controlled (siri?). Look I don’t give a rats ass for apple stuff, but I have enough friends that are all into the ios integrated stuff. It’s a pretty slick solution to bring easy, tech stuff for the average non-techy person. I’m not into it though

2 words: Voice Actions! This is what voice control on Android was meant to be. This has been capable of all the Siri-esque commands for nearly 2 years! Once again, Apple robs someone else’s ideas and tells the masses (sheeple) that this is the cool new thing you must have, and millions of mindless apes sell their birthrights to make sure they can have the latest, greatest thing from Apple. All the while, Android devs are working on the next thing that Apple will make cool 2 more years from now…

Seriously, let’s stop annoucing Siri equivalents until they have the proper back-end functions in place. Any “Siri Alternative” needs at minimum weather service, integration into calender and alarm clock, a task service, proper querying of wikipedia and wolfram alpha (and knowing when do display info from either), social network integration (all of them), access to emails, texts, and voice mail, and travel site integration. That is all the absolute least amount it should do (I can live without the “personality” bs if you ask a stupid question like “where should I hide a body” you should get back “please issue a relevant command”) and on top of all that it still has to decipher a command given in natural language and discern how to properly handle it.

This goes to show that most people don’t know what Siri actually is. The “highlight” of Siri is its natural language interpretation, this is impressive and took years to develop. Outside of that it does the same thing every other voice command program does, take a command, decide which application to use, query, and return results. In short the difference between saying “Siri will I need an umbrella tomorrow” and “Siri give me tomorrow’s forecast” is syntax interpretation. So, for those that still don’t follow, any voice command program can do what Siri does with access to the right programs and databases, only a handful can properly decipher natural language and none currently do that as well as Siri.

“This is not a Siri replacement at all” based on your use of Cluzee or based on how the article describes it? I’m not trying to be argumentative; I’m genuinely curious. Because you’re right, Cluzee’s functionality as described in this article is hardly new — most phones can already do speech-to-text and text-to-speech out of the box.

One problem with your statement there and that is Siri wasn’t integrated into the iOS because Apple wouldn’t let it. In fact the only thing Apple actually did after purchasing it was allow the core Siri development team to finally integrate the service into iOS and use Apple’s servers. That is not the same as Google purchasing Android, hiring a couple of people from the original team. Google is currently developing Android, Siri is owned by Apple. Not taking sides I just hate when people spit misinformation about technology like saying Apple invented the mp3 player or that Google created YouTube. The distribution of such gross misconceptions needs to stop.

Siri connects to a central server for answering questions. It is much more than reading your email, schedule and voice commands. This is not a Siri replacement at all. Voice recognition/commands has been around phone for a while. Siri is much more than this, that is why people like and use it.

Vlingo (which I use daily) has two modes: standard and in car. In car can be configured to launch automatically on bluetooth and provides hands free action. Just say “hey vlingo” then speak the command. Vlingo in car is limited to texting, calling and navigation.

Do they realize the word looks like “clutzy”, as in slang for clumsy?

Is this another sign of the Yahooification of Google? (Google’s products usually don’t have such a Disney video game look to them, especially not the one they’re suggesting is the new cutting edge feature.)

Doesn’t seem like it works as well as Siri (which also still needs work), but I suppose we’ll hear!
