Civilization Revolution 2 will be exclusively mobile

2K Games has just made a revelation that would elate smartphone-wielding fans of the Civilization franchise. The sequel to 2008's turn-based strategy game, slyly named Civilization Revolution 2, will be coming next month. But more than that, it was built primarily for and will be released exclusively on mobile devices.

The first Civilization Revolution was launched way back in 2008 but was meant primarily for the console generation of that era. A mobile phone edition did come out eventually, for iOS in 2009 and Windows Phone in 2012. This time, however, the tables are turned and Firaxis and 2K Games have focused on bringing the sequel first to smartphones and tablets, and maybe never to consoles.

What exactly does that mean though? It basically means graphics that have been tailored to the strengths of current mobile device hardware, but also within the limits of such. 2K Games calls it "high impact graphics". But more importantly, it also means gameplay and controls that have been designed around touch-based input, instead of requiring some form or perversion of a game controller. Being a non-twitch turn-based game, Civilization is indeed a perfect fit or some rather laid back gameplay on a mobile device.

That's not to say that will be only the new feature in this upcoming sequel. There will be new leaders to take control of, including Winston Churchill and John Kennedy. These will join the ranks of 16 historical personas carried over from the first game, a roster that includes Lincoln, Ghandi, and Napoleon. As with the existing game, Civilization Revolution 2 will also start from the dawn of time and, should your civ prove resilient enough, last all up to the modern age. If you want to go beyond that, you might want to look at the upcoming Civilization: Beyond Earth, though that is unlikely to land on mobile any time soon, if at all.

Civilization Revolution 2 will become available for iOS devices starting July 2, with no price details yet. Android fans will have to wait a bit longer, though 2K Games only says it will be coming later. Windows Phone users, on the other hand, might be a bit out of luck this time around.
