Those looking for different display options will be pleased to hear that Chi Mei Optoelectronics, a component manufacturer in Taiwan, will be making new LCD screens for notebooks that sport wider display sizes that are LED-backlit. And the best part is they will be launching this year.
First up is a 13.4-inch display that's LED-backlit and offers a 500:1 contrast ratio. It would be used in the thinner notebook models. Then, there's a 15.6-inch display that would have a 250-nit brightness, a 8ms response time and a 1,600 x 900 resolution.
Supposedly yet another 13.4-inch model is due in the spring as well that would be even thinner. Chi Mei is planning for a 0.14-in or 3.6mm screen and a 8.9-inch touchscreen as well. We don't know what notebook manufacturers will be using these displays, but since Dell uses these displays sizes currently, they might be a safe bet.
