The NHTSA did four original tests to simulate a severe crash. In two tests, there was no fire at the time of the crash, but later the damaged Volt's battery caught on fire in storage due to fluid leaks. In another test, the battery caught on fire at the time of the crash, but only after it was flipped 180 degrees to simulate a rollover. In the fourth test, the battery never caught on fire. So, the original non-reinforced battery compartment only caught fire quickly when rolled over after a severe crash.

Like the chose few who tried with the 70&80's pickups; when polple have an agenda they all want to jump on the bandwagon. Ford has had their problems as well as chrysler and the lowly Fiat in the early years. Fiat could not get it rgiht then and shut down. Let the media get ahold of one incident and they balloon it out of proportion. I will admit that sometimes problems get overlooked in design. So they keep doing improvements.
