As an active Facebook user and an available single mother, I will tell you that the best thing is to hide your relationship status ASAP! If you meet somebody new and start a new involvement, under no circumstances should you post it on Facebook. It’s nobody’s business but your own. Keep it private and personal, that’s why they call it your PRIVATE LIFE. The people who post that they are in relationships look like they are announcing to the world that they are sleeping around and it makes them quite undesirable.

This is brilliantly constructed. I understand Facebook as too personal these days, purely because it complicates life in these situations, so I’ve gotten rid of it. Hopefully people will become less Facebook dependent in the future.

A nice article, tough situation.

I must add my 0.02 though. It continues to ‘sadden’ and ‘confuse’ me somewhat how so many people have become literally (and almost physically) co-dependent on FaceBook, and yet how it causes so much trouble for everyone. People say they “need” FaceBook like an umbilical they simply cannot exist without…without FB the sky will fall, life will end etc.

All of the (nicely written) story above would be entirely moot but for FB. Just like humans actually can survive without a cell phone attached to them 24/7, or cable TV (despite what they say or think), so too can they survive (and thrive) without FB.

I went through the exact same thing within the past year. Met my ex-wife in college, dated for four years, were married for five, had a child who is now 16 months old, and then I was told she wanted to separate. I removed all of her friends from facebook, and her sister and family. I was very close with all of them, and it truly feels like I’m losing not just my partner, but a lot of friends too. To make matters worse, she doesn’t want to tell her friends, so I can’t put anything on facebook. I hid my relationship status, which I think might be a good starting place for you as well. I considered making a website for single dads to share things, because it was so difficult. All I can say, is good luck, and I hope things get better.

After almost 10 years i got in the same postion last saturday and also trying to deal with the friends and facebook thing.. Stumbled on your article and i thank you for writing it. It gives me some comfort and advise…

I know i will be much happier in the future although it doesnt feels like it right now.

I went through the almost the exact same situation over four years ago. My son was two and my ex and I had been together for almost 18 years. It was hard but things couldn’t be better for all of us. As I write this, I’m living with an amazing woman who is sitting with my son, who is almost 7, and drawing Star Wars characters. My ex is doing better too. Good luck, stay focused on your son and think long term when old wounds come up.

I just spent 30 minutes trying to come up with something supportive to a person I’ve never met or even heard of before. Funny how when people open up you want to respond with kindness.
