I am a clueless consumer. I went out once and bought a very slick smartphone. I really liked the way it looked. I could surf the web and check my emails. It is really a mobile computing device. I can run apps (software) on it. I can also make calls (albeit, sometimes with limited success).

Then I wanted to run another piece of software I liked on my laptop, so I called the company I bought it from. They said they can't have it on my smartphone. Why? I asked. They said Apple wouldn't allow it. Can they make me a version ... just for me? No. Apple wouldn't allow me to install it. They said it is not "Good for me".

But, it is MY phone, I thought. I checked my credit card statement. Indeed, I did pay for it.
Could they prevent me from running this app on my laptop as well?

Oh well. Maybe they are right. This is Apple. They know best what's good for me. This must have something just like this app that must, no doubt, be better for me. Thank you Apple for saving me from myself!

extremely small percentage of iPhone / ipod users need to replace their batteries in first two years of ownership. an iPhone 4 with an aged battery still outperforms a brand new EVO in battery life.

if you knew anything about the knockoff battery market, you'd know why apple made that choice (besides being able to shave off 15% of the thickness)

While I feel that 4k people is a lot when you take a look at how many smart phones are activated each week the numbers are massive each day their are 295.890 IPhone activated witch is where this survey confuses me as there are 550,000 Android activated each day so what do we take from this I think it would have been far better if instead of just asking people they should have just checked sales figures would have been a lot less time consuming and would have given true figures not guess work
If the figures I have used are wrong please feel free to correct me I did use 2 different sources on Google for them

Owning an Apple product is like condoning government to control how
you live your life and doing it under the guise of taking care of you. No
thanks, I'd prefer my less consistent, greater possibility world. At every turn
along your way, "Big Brother" is reaching into your pockets. Apple
doesn't want to just control content. They want to control your money flow.
They do not see the value of mass production and the financial success it
brings to Google. Google doesn't have to nickel and dime you every step of the
way to make a profit. I would guess it is more ideology than the functionality.
I simply do not want the equipment manufacturer to have that much control over
me and my hard earned cash.

You can't really knock the idea of being able to replace your phone battery by yourself without having to ship it and pay a fee that you really don't know what its comprised of. i use my phone for work emails, conference calls, browsing pretty much most of the day and being able to take an extra battery (or two) should I run low on power has saved my butt more than a few times. I'm not so sure I'd be able to pull that off with a device that carried an internal battery.

just the same, to each his own.

Android powers a wide range of devices, from high-end smartphones to lower-end mass market devices. Because it's free, it will and has become the most widely used phone OS. And because it is in a wide range of phones, it will get more mixed reviews.

Put another way: the consumer doesn't quite know what he gets when he buys an "Android" phone.

Apple, because it offers a limited choice, can offer a more consistent phone experience.

Wow, it's amazing, you really can predict the FUTURE. I'm impressed! Oh by the way, I have a quick question for you. Can you please explain why most corporations are switching to APPLE'S total turnkey solution which includes software, hardware and network cloud that work seamlessly across the entire enterprise? Can you also answer another simple question? Why did total worldwide PC sales come in 1% lower then the previous quarter, while Apple's PC sales were increasing by 25%?

You're absolutely right. Simple minded consumers don't waste time worrying about replacing a battery because we are more interested in how long a battery can supply operational power to our Apple IPHONES. Simple minded consumers also like a total turnkey solution which includes software, hardware, network cloud, etc. from one vendor like APPLE that work seamlessly across the entire enterprise. On the other hand, really smart people like you like WOW products with limited total integration capabilities and short operational battery life. But WOW, you can replace the poorly designed battery. Another point, simple minded consumers don't spend valuable time wondering why total worldwide PC sales dropped by 1% last quarter, while Apple's PC sales increased by 25%. We already know the answer, these products work and they are simple to use.

I am a cheap flash ad. developer. I am your run of the mill nerd. I also like freeware because I can easily develop on other's hard work and it allows me to make money.

I hate Apple because it does not give me opportunities to make money. I am jealous that it has made such a fantastic ecosystem yet it won't spread the joy around. Because of this I consider Steve Jobs to be a selfish - nay ego maniac. The day he spreads his wealth around, I will love him. Remember I am a cheap developer. I love things for free, so that I can earn a living on others hard work.

So I don't care whether customers like Apple products or not.

I hate apple. I have an ulterior motive to hate apple.

As someone who has recently gotten into the smartphone game, one thing I see that Apple (and Microsoft's WP7) has is superior support for corporate environments. For example, in my corporation, access to the corporate Exchange email server via ActiveSync in only supported for iPhone and Windows Mobile/WP7 phones, since Android (at least up through 2.3.4) doesn't support the full set of security restrictions, in particular local encryption of storage. You'd think after a couple of years on the market, and many requests, Google would have addressed this to aid the pentration of Android in the corporate environmet, but apparently Google's Android development team is too busy implementing new eye candy to take care of business. Or maybe they're just not capable of making it work?

Anyway, that's just one example. I think, arguably, that Apple is offering overall a better-polished, more integrated solution than the various Android phones. But as with their PCs, it is more proprietary and not as open, with not as many opportunities for customization - but I'm not sure than other that some hackerish types, that matters too much to most prospective customers.
