Considereing that these are in a very early stage of developement, I'm expecting some really innovative sleek designs to hit the market about 180 days from now, so the fact that a majority of these ultrabooks are quite to-par with Macbook is saying a lot. Mathmatically its saying that intel and the other manufacturers are progressing at a much quicker rate than Mac, as they seem to be more focused on their tablet/phones. And the technologies/prototypes demoed at CES are amazing, nothing less. I think alot of people are seriesly underestimating the technological capacities demonstrated by Micrososoft, Intel, and the hardware manufactuers out of prodominately biased reasons involving (not liking MS). However, I beleive that if you continue to keep this closed mindedness close by, you will be missing out on a computer revolution coming up in the next few years. It all ads up, starting with Intel. Intel has created amazing new chips and processors. Windows has basically reinvented themselves with the windows phone, bringing about the metro interface, which by the way is apsolutly awesome (i have a wp). And then they've incouperated the metro into the xbox, with xbox 360 and kinect, and now wth windows 8 which is less power consuming, boots incredibly fast, and is quite origiainal and innovative. Just with Microsoft and intel alone, the technologies far over power that of Macinotosh. And because of the haul of innovation in the chipmaking and OS field, hardware manufactuaers like hp, lenovo, dell, acer ect... are now incredibly influenced to create innovative "futureistic" (if you will) designs to best accomidate all of these new technologies. Intel is largely pushing these companies to do so, with these prototypes and examples, and I beleive that those are only scratching the surface of what you might see. There is no way in the worldthat I would choose a linear jumpy Mac OS Macbook Air over a innovative quickly booting Ivy bridge usb 3.0 usb, WIDI support, NFC, Skydrive cloud storaged PC, in cunjunctionwtmyXbox, windows phone, and kinect capability. What it means to be a PC will take on a whole othe meaning in the comming months/ year. I'm excited! but are you? And unfortuantely for microsoft and the PC enviornment, t heir success with these next gen Pcs is now in the hands of harmketing, which they are spending a lot of money on, but I'm still a little skepticle wheather or not they'll "get it". If they';; imdrsttand that in order to sell someting, you need to make the people feel like they can spend 1500 Ds on yor product. And you do that, and STeve jobs, did this by making people feel like if they had this product, they would be like the people in his advertisements, perfect life

The Intel ATOM Medfield is only intended for mobile and embedded range devices, all of which doesn't include Ultrabooks.

What you're probably actually waiting for is the 22nm Silvermont Intel ATOM chips that are coming out in 2013.

They really are competing in the tablet market and you really are starting to get some quality screen resolutions and technology. Let's be honest, consumers have been sold much more computer than they've actually needed for a long time because desktops were really all we had.

No one really has consumer use models fully worked out anywhere but in tablet maybe..(7" vs. 10") vs. wifi vs. telco, but the market is in agreement that the "starter"/base acquisition is tablet so that's where they're going all out. Once they have a better idea what the other mobile companion might look like, ultra vs. full laptop, then they may start really paying better attention to the specs. The other reason they like the spec race on these "disposables" because churn is much higher.

Can someone please throw in a decent VA or IPS display? Even big IPS promoter Apple still puts plain shit in its notebooks (Hey, remember those awesome 1600x1200 IPS Thinkpads from 2005?). With tablets screens are all of a sudden imporatant again. Even Asus is taking screens serious for 250$ tablets now..... Strange the portable workstations are left so far behind and pure consumerist crap is treated with quality components.

I love my MacBook Air 13.3". As a long time HP laptop fan I was skeptical. I purchased one in May and was immediately impressed at the design, thin, speed, etc... At double the price I was spending on an HP in the past I definitely think it was expensive but now love it so much i wouldn't change to any other device.
