With the Notion Ink adam you don’t need to root or sideload. Just download the .apk to adam and install. Just like you’d install something on your computer. They showed how easy it was on their blog. Seriously, nothing hard or difficult about it.

One hour after my post above, interviews with Rohan and live demos of the Adam from CES were all over the Internet, starting with Slashgear. So I had been worried in vain. I still think posting those shopped pictures and claiming they were real shots was done in poor taste. We saw the real shots from CES very soon afterwards, and they were much better than the ones on the NI blog.

Rohan just posted some sloppily done renders claiming that they are “straight from the camera, only resized in GIMP”.

But you and I are the 1% minority that do that. The vast majority of people aren’t rooting/sideloading apks or doing anything remotely like that. They are stuck with the stock experience and the stock experience of most of these tablets with the “free” android is not good.

There are some tablets out there with the “full” google experience, most notably the Galaxy Tab. Without that you don’t get Market, Maps, gmail, Navigation or Youtube.

Yes, most tablets have been “slammed” for not having market access. I’ve been somewhat surprised that even the tech sites have done so, considering how easy it is to install apk’s and the alternative markets out there (ignoring the china ones for security issues). Then again I’ve never been one to think an app market is all that needed for anything besides IOS, since Apple rules over their devices limiting them to only run approved software. Give me free control over what I can install/run and a browser with google search and I’m set.

I heard that Google will not let tablets have access to Market until Honeycomb comes out. If that is so, won’t EVERY company (with the exception of Motorola, which is rumored to have Honeycomb installed) get slammed?

Stop saying Android is free… Android is only free if you don’t want the “with google” apps (most importantly the Market without which you have no apps) and every device that launches without Market access gets slammed in reviews.

Yes saying 2010 was going to be the year of the tablet was always going to be ambitious. I was genuinely surprised by the quality of the ipad for a real first generation tablet, unfortunately it is an apple product and an apple philosophy of business will always hinder a purchase from me. That being said if it had a camera and video skype they may well have sold me one :)

So I’m looking forward to a tablet that I can do all the usual internet browsing, email, video conferencing with rich multimedia features, long battery life and that I can sit in the park on a sunny day and read without issue, preferably matte screen. What manufacturer will suit my needs?

Actually, I do love iOS. More so with 4.2 than 3.x. Android is on the cusp of becoming a tablet OS that I’m sure I’ll love as well. 2010 was a great year for devices, roll on 2011.

these tablets need to be more than just a tablet. they need to be intelligently designed to doc properly into a device that makes them a proper netbook or laptop and not just a bunch of add on bits and peaces so they are still very mobile even with a keyboard and mouse.
