For those of you bored with the Neo 1973 hardware, OpenMoko is back with the Freerunner. It has 2D and 3D graphics capabilities, a 500MHz processor. There is also WiFi, and motion sensors, god knows how those’ll be used.

There will be two models available, an 850MHz tri-band model and a 900MHz tri-band model. I don’t know about the rest of you, but this is sounding like the perfect Android phone.

It has the more than the minimum 200MHz processor, it has the touch screen, it has the 2D and 3D graphics, and most importantly it is completely open to those who purchase it, so as soon as that source code for the full Android OS gets released and this phone gets released, I’d put money on someone developing the necessary drivers and such to install Android on it, if they haven’t already been written. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I can’t wait to see Android on a phone I can actually get my hands on.

I have just about given up hope that this phone will really ever come out.

OpenMoko’s Neo has been on sale for quite sometimes now, you can buy them from OpenMoko Direct

Openmoko doesn’t make phones. Openmoko is the software. FIC makes the neo.

@Ron - OpenMoko is also a company founded by FIC to support the project. They are also bringing you the Neo, even though it is produced by FIC.

However, why on earth would you want Android on it? Isn’t OpenMoko (the OS) far more exciting? It’s more open, and has attracted more open source developers, which means that it will probably spawn many free (in all possible senses of the word) applications, whereas around Android you’ll probably see a culture of free trials and limited versions like you see with Windows Mobile.

Perhaps a dual-boot, just to give Android a try, would be nice ;)

The Freerunner has a 400MHz processor not 500 MHz.
