Today I got to meet with some people from Everex. They showed me their two newest products: the Everex Cloudbook and the Everex Gbook.

The Cloudbook – initially known as the CE260 when first announced last June - is a UMPC and it measures 9” in length and weighs only 2 pounds. It has a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M, ultra low voltage, CPU and it has 5 hours of battery life on a 4 cell lithium-ion battery. It also features 30GB of internal storage, DVI-I, 4in1 card reader and 1.3MP Webcam, and is based on VIA’s own NanoBook UMPC reference design (another version of which Packard Bell currently sell in the UK). The Cloudbook will be available January 25th at Wal-Mart and will retail for $399.

The Gbook is a laptop that has a 1.5GHZ VIA C7-M processor, 512MB DDR2 SDRAM, 60GB SATA HDD, DVD/CD-ROM, 15.4” WXGA and a widescreen display. It weighs 5.3lbs and 14.06”x10.67”x1.02”. It’ll cost $399 and be available though Wal-Mart as well.

That cloudbook certainly looks like interesting competition for the eee, especially with the more, albeit slower, storage.

I picked up my Everex gBook yesterday.

I did not really mind gOS but I loaded Ubuntu 8.04 on it the day I got it (and updated the xorg.conf file to force 1440×900 resolution) I love the 15.4″ high resolution display. I ordered 2Gig of DDR2 PC4200/533Mhz RAM for just under $50 which should be in soon… The 667Mhz speed listed above is wrong…

I popped off most of the keys and repositioned them to take advantage of the DVORAK keyboard layout. To finally get a mass-market laptop without the Microsoft Tax that plays nice with Linux is great…

The $379 price I got it for was also a no brainer. The 1.5Ghz VIA processor runs cool and you can actually use it resting on your lap for extended periods…

Wireless configuration using both gOS and Ubuntu 8.04 was flawless… (Downloading Ubuntu 8.04 iso and burning it using the built in optical drive and then reinstalling from it was one of the first things I did…)

I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants a no-frills Linux based laptop. (Grab one before they are gone…)

I am looking for a “no frills” laptop for my 80 yr old mother who will be in a physical care facility for two months and wants e-mail and internet connection to the outside world. Both of us are not very computer smart so I think the Everex gBook looks perfect for the price. I wish I could understand Johns comments so I would know what “add-ons” I should ask for. Can I buy the gBook and use it as is? Will it really not get hot on moms lap? Should I buy the warranty?
