The ratio of publicity to activity with this particular Senator is nearly off the charts. He’s spent every minute since he got in (and they kept him out for like a year!) getting shit done. He’s creating a hell of record. Franken is my favorite (non)story in US politics this year!

If you buy an unlocked phone is it still on there? If it is then does this mean the carriers are not actually forcing manufacturers to put the software on the device?

I love everything about Franken’s letter, except for his choice of the word “keypress”. The problem isn’t keypresses (volume up, power, camera) but screen taps. With that you can capture users’ passwords and other sensitive information because they are using the virtual keyboard.

It’s pretty damning that the software continues to run even on deactivated phones that are no longer under contract. Surely that’s not legal, assuming it was for phones under contract (which I hope it isn’t either).

But, I thought I was told we want LESS regulation and to simply let companies treat us right out of sheer goodness. And what about the job killing aspect? I mean what will all the people at CarrierIQ do if they loose their jobs reading our private email, and otherwise looking over your shoulder? I guess they will have to take up a new, more honest career, like robbing banks.

Just when I start to lose faith in my government, and think of it as something I grow to hate…
A ray of light opens from the heavens. Al Franken is on the case.
And that not only makes me feel good, it’s damn cool. And he’s a competent, functioning figure in government.
Something of a triple-threat combo that never happens in our government. We need more like him.
