Which is a valid point. However, with Apple v Samsung and all the other litigation in the mobile space this year I think the legal attack dogs are bleeding the sector dry; we should stop feeding them so much meat.

That is basically the whole issue. They did it without asking. There are lots of ways companies collect data from users to make products better. I for one am glad to see litigation, perhaps these and other companies will think twice next time.

It is quite possible that the objective of this data gathering was both reasonable and positive for users. If so the carriers, phone makers and the company that produced this code could have had all the cooperation required. All they had to do was ASK.

High speed litigation and aggressive class-actions in this matter seem deeply counter-productive at this stage. Perhaps those involved should follow the approach taken by SwiftKey; in asking for data to make their product more effective for the individual user of their software. That indicates the path of transparency and sanity required.
