If you don't have time to deal with RAW footage, then the C300 isn't the camera for you, since it has no AF/AE. Also, I've edited RED RAW. it was exactly like editing any other footage.

agree with you. it's like you saw that the Emperor is wearing no clothes. this camera and the Red's Scarlet look like consumer models. price should be around $2,000. but they both target them for the professional market or the indie filmmaker so they figure they can get 5 or 10 times more money. but when they put these big lenses and various accessories on them, monitors, batteries, they start to look so much more professional.

Yeah, and look at where that RedRock hand grip is in the stock photo! Who puts a camera handle at the back of the camera? wtf? This camera clearly was designed by engineers as opposed to a designer working closely with professionals to get things right. Imagine trying to pick up that camera with a 10:1 zoom on it? SNAP!...the junky RedRock handle might still be there, but the the 1st AC's wrist?...I guess no more shots will be in focus today. The controls do seem to be a little better placed for sort of easy access but it will still need lots of bracketry and the EVF is in the same stupid place as the F3...seriously how often is someone with real PL mount glass going to shoot with the camera like it's a handy cam? Panavision and Arri have have their viewfinders on the left side of the camera for over a century, what makes these people think they were doing something wrong? They should have just left out the EVF and let people use 3rd part solution or do what Red did.

What is the maximum bitrate of this camera of yours? What is the widest aperture of this Carl Zeiss lens? Which Carl Zeiss lens is it for that matter? And is it a zoom lens? If so, what's the widest aperture at the longest focal length? What other frame rates can your Sony do? How do you genlock it? How do you get HD-SDI out? How can you put master primes on it? How big is the sensor? Why would someone want autofocus built into a large chip camera full manual control camera? I'm pretty sure things would be much more in focus from a skilled focus puller or using something like a C-Finder in AF mode, manufacturers of professional products realize this common sense and don't put too much effort at implementing the best AF possible for S35 sized sensor cameras. There are much better ways of doing AF or focus assist features to help out the 1st AC on tough shots. What other frame rates can your Sony HX100V do? How much latitude does it have? What is the native ASA of this Sony? Can you edit the footage natively in an MPEG2/HDV editor without any transcoding and realtime performance? Does it have timecode? How grainy is it at 1600 ISO compared to other S35 sensor sized cameras already on the market such as the F3 or a 7D? Have you done a test? Can you post it? Which HDTV is this? What viewing distance and shoot conditions/subject matter are you talking about when you say "visually undetectable specs"? By the way, we can all visually see a PL mount and HD-SDI out among other things so unless your Sony HX100V has some sort of professional add on box, lens mount and new firmware, the specs certainly ARE "visually detectable" atleast from what I briefly saw on google images:

Just looked at the specs of the new Scarlet. Had assumed Scarlet was going to be a 2/3 inch chip. Now that they have decided (rightly) to go 4k, and a starting price of $9700, I can't see why anyone would opted for Canon's hobbled 1080 camera. Red has blown everyone out of the water with the Scarlet. And I'm not a Red fan boy. Have always been skeptical of Red. But Scarlet is just too good to be true. I don't see how anyone else can compete. Kinda proud that they are an American company as well.

It's certainly a DSLR killer but it's not an F3 killer. For the money, I can pick up an F3 for $9,000, a gemini recorder, S-log and nikon mount and still come out at around the same price! That's 444 ... Canon is not quite there with this camera. I can see the writing on the wall however, small form factor, 35mm censor, versatile lens capabilities ... Scarlet anyone !

Edit.. just found out that the SDI out on the C300 is 10bit, so that'll help. I'm eager to see what happens when someone puts the F3 and the C300 against each other.

Sadly though, another camera like the F3 isn't really what we wanted as a sucessor to the 5Dm2... Canon could have done something really amazing. Why didn't they?

You're right about the ND filters. As for the image, I'm sure the conditions would have a lot to do with it. However, people have pointed out that because of the limits of 8bit, the F3 can't help but have a larger dynamic range in S-Log mode, simply do to the limits of 8 bits. I have no data to back up that claim though. I agree that the C300 records in a better onboard codec, but if the price is as high as some reports, you could get an F3 and the S-Log update for the same price, perhaps even a nano flash recorder too.

As for the "ergonomic nightmare", I'm assuming that aside from being a bit heaver and larger then the 5d, the ergonomics are about the same, and therefor, also require a cage before it becomes manageable. I'm probably a bit picky, personally. I shoot with ENG cameras, so I'm used to a camera that has a center of gravity that's in a manageable location. Getting a 5D's center of gravity to behave requires rails. (I'm a Steadicam Operator, hence all this babble about a camera's center of gravity.)

I don't understand. Is this 4K resolution or 1080p? I know the super 35mm sensor makes a difference. But how is this different from the Sony F1? Anyone out there who is able to clarify?

What are the pros and cons of this compared to the scarlet?

Both cameras are ridiculous in price and the CEO of Red sounds like he inherited the mantle from St. Jobs of the Church of Apple. You can keep 'um. What kind of Independent Filmmaker can afford to shell out that kind of cash? Sounds more like something you'd expect from Wall Street.

The $450 Sony HX100V 16 Mp "still" camera with a Carl Zeiss lens is capable of sharp 1920x1080p video @ 60fps. I own one and I'd bet the video quality seen on my 46" HDTV would come close to Canon's C300 within visually undetectable specs. (The dynamic range is almost unbelievable) Among the features Sony has that Canon lacks is tracking autofocus.

It does have ND. I don't see why is more of an ergonomic nightmare than the F3. Image looks nice. Better, I think than the F3. Looks like it has more dynamic range than f3 and records in a better codec.

Yep. Scarlet is exactly what people have been looking for. Canon totally dropped the ball. If RED can do it, Canon could have and probably could have made it even cheaper.

Makes you wonder if RED found out what Canon was coming out with and scheduled their release a few hours afterwards on purpose.
