This is Netflix's attempt to cut its DVD's by mail completely. First, it's to lower the amount of customers, then in a few years, they announce that they are ending the service. Basically, they're sabotaging it. The actual price for streaming by itself isn't changing.

I have Netflix right now and will cancel it on September 5th and switch to Hulu Plus. A good portion of people who have Netflix "cut the cord" to the cable companies. Why do people have cable? To watch TV. TV stations are going to delay new episodes by at least a week starting this year (at least Fox is) meaning if you have Netflix and no cable, you won't be able to watch your favorite show until a week after it airs. On Hulu Plus, you will. I don't mind the commercials and want to watch my shows. I can watch movies (which are never "new" on basic cable) through things like Crackle, Vudu ($2 for 2 nights), Hulu Plus has a limited selection, and Redbox. Also, Amazon has movies if your have a Prime membership, which I have, but mostly because I shop at Amazon a lot and the shipping pays for itself.

Yes the movies are old, but most movies on cable are old. That's where Redbox comes in, just remember to return the movie (it gives you PLENTY of time).

If you still find Netflix's streaming library valuable, great, but it's not for everyone and really not for those that are using it as a substitute for cable.

Say that again when they raise prices in January, and then again next August, and again the following August. It won't be just one cocktail then, will it? If enough people kept Netflix, that's a sign to them that they need to raise the price even higher. That's why if people aren't happy with the increase, they should express it. It's important for Netflix to know where the line is.

Netflix isn't worth that much money. After about 6 months of netflix I was ready to get rid of it anyway. Piracy is 100% better, if its out on bluray its probably on the internet for free a day or two later.

Netflix turned me away from pirating and bootleg movies because of its low $10 plan. Now they're raising the price with no incentive or explination to its existing customers and you're telling us to just shut up and take it?
Ok, this author acts as if Netflix is as valuable as air. I switched to blockbuster and get new movies a lot sooner than Netflix. Maybe it wouldn't be such a big deal if the news article about Netflix wasn't such a slap to the face. Anway, their competition is increasing and they chose to do a price hike instead and not even offer a valid reason so goodbye Netflix!

The 30 day delay didn't really bother me because let's be honest: who really got the new releases when they came out on Netflix even if you put them at the top of the queue? Not too many times did I get it.... I agree that the streaming aspect is limited and it isn't worth if too much for me except for when I want to watch certain shows on the XBOX, iPhone, or 3DS.... I can never find a movie I want on it (sometimes TV shows are on there that I watch), but I'd rather pay $2 per movie and always get the movie I want. Sure it costs more, but I can at least not get disappointed or feel like I wasted money if I don't get to watch it.

If you gave us that $2/movie option, I'd stream movies with you. I just don't see a need to pay more money to you when you throttle my movies all the time. Popular movies NEVER get delivered to me because I watch so many movies every month, so you don't give me the popular ones at the top of my queue most of the time when they're new. I'd rather pay more and get more through iTunes and Zune than the collection I see for $8 at Netflix

i was streaming and renting perhaps 3 movies a month. since streaming is very limited in choice, i'll move to dvd rental only and drop my bill 50% by going to 2 rentals a month. i have apple tv rentals as a backup should i need the occasional fill in rental.

I have a few problems with the price hike.

1) We have an apple TV and there seems to be constant problems with netflix streaming between the server being down, no sound on certain movies or the sound and picture not matching up.
2) They didnt explain why they went up so much
3) When there is a major problem that effects everyone, they only offer a 2% discount. SERIOUSLY!?!?!?!

I will say that the library of movies that you can stream live, has def. grown BUT I dont think it really warrants the price hike, just yet.

With their turn-around speed, you can't get 8 movies per month on the 1 DVD plan. I've already dropped cable due to high prices. I'll probably drop the DVD portion of Netflix, & stay with streaming. There SHOULD be some discount for the combined service, even if it was a buck! The cheapest broadband, VoIP, Hulu, the Library and maybe streaming Netflix --- that's all I'll be buying, at these prices

Who raises their prices during the greatest recession since the 1930's? People who are seriously out of touch with reality that's who. I dropped Netflix out of principle.
Not at all. The concept at hand would be submitting to decisions made against the general consensus and giving in instead of putting up a fight to defend what one considers just.

"Can we just pay the military and move on?" would be an illogical and irrelevant question to ask in this situation.

"where netflix is providing more value than alternatives, making them the obvious choice. Your question doesn't fit that scheme"

It doesn't fit that scheme because that's not the scheme it was made to fit.

It is now clear that the only reason you are accusing my example of being incorrect is because you don't support my counterargument against the author, not because my example is actually incorrect, which it is not.

I respect your right to disagree with me and support the author, but only if or when you make a valid argument instead of quoting me and saying "Not really."

the best streaming service in the business? Compared to what? Nothing? Let me just say, I do enjoy my streaming netflix service but it's far from the best of anything especially when we're talking about the movie selection in reference to new releases. Now, I'm being a bit hypocritical here because I do enjoy older movies much more than anything the recent big screen has managed to produce. (I can watch 'Birdcage' over and over again) but even 'Birdcage' didn't appear on instant until about 2/3weeks ago. I was going through the "new release" section of netflix yesterday and was absolutely APPALLED by the insanely pathetic selection for NEW titles. If netflix is dead set on raising their prices (and it appears that they are) they need to divert that cash towards some new licensing agreements with these studios and beef up the selection because as it stands now, I could totally do without netflix. I think I power up my apple tv, twice a week now, IF that.

"For instance, let’s say someone decides to save the $7.99 from Netflix’s DVD plan and rent discs from Redbox instead. Assuming that person brings back the DVDs they rent the next day, they’ll be spending $1 each time they go to the kiosk. If they only rent a few DVDs, they’ll save money on the deal. But as soon as they hit the eight-DVD mark, they’re spending just as much as they did with Netflix. And as soon as they go beyond that, Netflix becomes the better offer."

Okay, let's analyze this. It is actually IMPOSSIBLE to rent much more than 8 films from Netflix if you are on the 1 disc at a time plan UNLESS you return the film THE SAME DAY you receive it in the mail. To see this simple fact, consider the math.

There are 31 days (at most) in any month. There are at least 4 Sundays (plus Holidays) in each month. The post office does not deliver mail on Saturdays or Holidays. If you return the film the next day (most people do), then you have to wait for the mail to arrive at Netflix (another day) and then one day to return a film back to you (another day). Thus, the most number of films you can watch in a week is 2. To see this, let's analyze. You receive your DVD on Tuesday (woo hoo! new release day!). You mail it back on Wednesday. They receive it on Thursday. You receive your new DVD on Friday. You return it Saturday. They receive it on Monday. You receive your DVD on Tuesday (woo hoo! new release day!). That means that you receive movies on Tuesday and Friday of each week. There are four weeks in a month. In February, you receive only 8 discs. In other months, AT MOST, you can receive 9 discs. But then you are forgetting about the holidays, which can also reduce your ability to rent discs (indeed, it is extremely rare that you will hit the 9 disc mark and, if you are like many of us, WHO WANT NEW RELEASES, you hold on to return your discs when there is a holiday so that you will get back on track to receive your new release disc on the Tuesday.

Furthermore, your math is faulty in other regards. At redbox, there are often free giveaways allowing you to rent discs for effectively LESS than $1 at a time (2 for 1 deals or 3 for the price of 2).

So Stephen Bush and the others are right. However, the benefit from Netflix is the catalog and the convenience of just going to the mailbox. Essentially, the only game in town other than Netflix is really Blockbuster when you consider the depth of the catalog and that mailbox convenience. Redbox has about 150-200 titles AT MOST and you have to drive to a Redbox to use it (and return it). Plus, you have to return Redbox the next day or you get changed for an additional day (unlike Blockbuster and Netflix). Netflix has tens of thousands, all of which you can get by mail. Blockbuster is similar. Blockbuster has program at $10/month for their DVD by mail program. Netflix's is $8. Netflix wins. UNLESS you use the Blockbuster in-store exchange program.

To see this, let’s analyze.

Netflix’s is $8. Netflix wins. UNLESS you use the Blockbuster in-store exchange program.

Nope. Not really.
